You can only use it as a DAC for Mac, Windows(need to install drivers), no iPod(not sure if there are special software or anything since I don't own one myself).

Agreed... But I do more treadmill so I can set it in a cupholder. I have never used an armband.

I'm using X3 for my treadmill run for sometime and yes it's quiet heavy and uncomfortable in my pocket but am not willing to go back to other smaller DAP's because of X3 sq.

Doesn't your treadmill have a place to put stuff on? The ones at my gym have those plastic pockets at the side to put stuff in along with the center interface. I don't actually using treadmills, though. I suck it up and run outside with the X3 in my pocket. It's really not that bad for me.

By the way, I get this occasional error where my X3 stops being able to play files. It'll say something like "file format not supported." I fix this by restarting, but it's a little annoying.

10 hours - mp3 96 kbps (spoken word)

6 hours -  flac 44.1/16

No fiddling around with the player during the tests, screen was only on on the start of the test.

Nowhere near the 12-15 hours.

I see. I pair my X3 with the Philips Fidelio S2. I have not tried leaving the player running on its own on volume 30. Although the volume may vary during my not-so-strict battery test, I think it's okay to say that it's at volume 28 on average. Including occasionally fiddling around with the player to choose tracks and back light brightness 1 out of 4 and 10 seconds long. I only play flac 44.1/16. So I got around 10 - 10.5 hours. I think that's pretty decent and we won't normally be playing the X3 at a constant volume of 30. I wonder what earphones/headphones and tracks did FiiO use to test the battery life of the X3.

One more thing is that I use gapless playback. Any idea if this affects battery life?

It does but i run quite fast, so sometime the wires gets in the way. I have the same problem as you X3 doesn't play, especially when i go from FLAC to mp3 files. Only a restart will get things to normal and it's really annoying when this happens while running. I really hope they'll fix in the next update.

On my tests, gapless was set to on.

Mine worked on all of my desktop PC's (Win 8.1 and 7) but it didn't connect at all with my laptop (Clevo W350ST, Win 8.1).  It would just connect and reconnect every second.  Tried a bunch of things to make it work and gave up.  Returned it because I wanted to use it mainly for the Dac function on my laptop.

Not working on 8.1 desktop, working on 8 laptop :S

Otherwise, i'm working on linux, does the DAC is working on Linux ?
I read on this thread than it's possible since linux 3.0 (mine, 3.11.0-13-generic). The thing is, when i plug in, the dac menu pop up and disappear 2 seconds later ...

Thanks :)

I have a dilemma. I seem to be having an array of problems with the X3. So numerous that I'm considering sending it back. In the 10 days I've used the device, it:

-Freezes up for no apparent reason. It usually takes several attempts to reboot. It has even frozen up mid-track.

-Library update is temperamental. I've tried both manual and auto settings. Sticking to manual.

-Cover art is only displayed if I play music through category/artist/album configuration, but this method of finding tracks is extremely cumbersome. I have been selecting what I want to hear through the "files" function, and this generally doesn't display cover art.

-Device often doesn't respond to turning on/off, making it necessary to let the device "rest". (Grrrrrr!)

-SD slot not having a cover makes it easy to disturb the card.

So, what is the protocol for replacing what one believes is a defective (or just extra cloogy) device? Has anyone been able to have Fiio CS replace their unit?

I know this isn't an ipod, and am very impressed with much of this player's features, but it's flakiness seems to go beyond acceptable limits.

Thoughts?

Hello all, I am looking for a combination DAC/amp for my X3.
I am using Alpha Dogs and want a bit more volume and clarity.
I am sure that many options have been mentioned in this thread but there are SO many pages!
Can I please get a few recommendations?
Thanks,
Russ

This may be a stupid question, but here goes. I've been transferring files to the memory card in my X3 via USB. It's really slow. If I used a card reader, would that be faster?

YES

no man should ever have to transfer 50GB of files this way.(i did the first time)

you can get cheap cardreaders from deal extreme, but they might stop working if overheating. another option is the G3 usb3.0 reader from kingston, or just a usb 2.0 micro sd to usb reader

Really? I thought it is limited to the writing speed of your card.... I tried two card readers before and they are both dead... I did not notice that X3 reduced the writing speed....
