I found that this may come from some songs are copied with error and SD card format.

In my case, the copy error is come from my card reader is not fully compatible with sdxc, then I copy file by using USB connect to X3, solved.

SD card format, MUST Fat32 with 32k allocation.

After done above, no more black screen+freeze.

Hope it's help.

Thanks for the suggestion!  I installed the new FW, which has the "format" option.  I'll try formatting using their utility to make sure the format is compatible and then copy again via the X3 connected USB.

Someone else also suggested a bad card.

i connected X3 to PC around 11-12 a.m. Now it's almost 5 p.m. The device is still connected and is pretty warm, much warmer than my hand. Could it be a problem? i really hope it's not necessary to disconnect it from time to time to cool.

don't worry about it. X3 is being charge when connecting to your PC. and the battery will stop charging when it is full.

In the meantime, I am going to try other media players on the Mac and see what happens with them, when I try using the X3 in DAC mode.

Mavericks user here, running VLC 2.0.8 and no issues whatsoever with different MOVs and ALACs (I've changed the sampling rates a couple of times, too). Did you reboot the X3?

Not sure whether a driver is needed for MAC's for DAC functionality, or whether this is a VLC or OS X Mavericks issue.

Would be keen to hear other peoples experiences with similar setups and also any comments from Fiio.

X3 works perfectly as a DAC on my Mac (so far), also on Mavericks. I haven't used VLC yet, and I'm not home to try it, but I remember getting bad quality from VLC to a different DAC in the past. IIRC the fix was just to turn the volume down in VLC. IIRC, Quicktime/iTunes don't offer a volume control when a DAC is connected but VLC does, and if you turn it up in VLC it overloads something in the chain giving you distortion.

Here is the case I use for my X3:  http://www.amazon.co.uk/Case-Logic-Compact-Digital-Internal/dp/B0039BPFZW/ref=sr_1_58?ie=UTF8&qid=1382714547&sr=8-58&keywords=case+logic+camera+bag

It fits the X3 perfectly, as if it was made for it.  The main compartment is also just big enough for the FiiO USB cable.  The front compartment is just big enough for a pair of IEM's and contains a small pocket for memory cards.  The case comes with a belt attachment and a removable strap.  It's cheap, but well made.  Available everywhere.

Oh yes, I've set VLC to reset the volume @ 100% everythime it starts up (center of the volume bar). If you push it to 200% it induces distortion.

James...   something is going on with my X3....   have the new firmware and it looks like its working pretty good but I have now experienced two times now when I play a tune and fast forward the song the X3 has locked up...      I try to unlock it with every combination of the buttons but nothing seemed to work..then the screen times out.. I then pull out the memory card, plug the usb cable in

and the screen comes back on... play with several combinations of button pushes and it just comes back to life...  like the usb cable started a timer ???

can you tell me of some of the button combinations and what they do... might help?

thanks

Sound quality has greatly improved with this FW, it's cleaner and treble's much better. I don't think its placebo but I can go back to the older FW just to be sure.

This is fascinating! I, along with another person, thought so too. If it´s a placebo (which could easily be the case) then it´s one affecting several users at once. Strange.

EDIT: I tried to measure it, yet couldn´t find any difference with RMAA. Jitter however looks slightly different. But the difference is probably insignificant.
