as far as sound quality goes, i cannot begin to stress how good this player sounds. I cant really say if it sounds warm like some people report or not because i use it with ATH-m50's, but there is definitely a bunch more clarity to the sound as compared to my ipod classic + lod + fiio E11. I just thought I should point out that if you're looking for a very user friendly interface that will wow and amaze, this is not the right place. This is a player for music, not a player for staring at.

Love the durability of this thing though, its built like a tank. I'd love to see a precision milled stainless steel or anodized aluminum chassis on a player. i feel like that would be 10 kinds of sexy. But then again, im an engineer and weird things like that catch my attention.

From what you've said I think I can handle its shortcomings. I would certainly miss all of the Rockbox flexibility, but if it sounds good and has a decent album art display then that's generally what I need.

The thing that draws me in is the look of the thing. Not the display but the unit itself. I love that aesthetic. I don't know why that matters to me but it does. It just looks great to me.

it was a shock going from rockbox to this thing because i really took some of the UI stuff for granted. that being said, as long as your music is well organized, you should have absolutely no problems.

I dont think this is possible without a major overhaul, but i would love a feature where i could long press to add things to the current "now playing" playlist. Either that or (as has been discussed) a more intuitive menu system in category view so that I can, for example, play only 2 albums from an artist or something like that. And the track number sorting thing is really effing annoying, but not a problem in browse mode.

As a disclaimer, i almost exclusively listen to full albums OR the entire player on shuffle OR an entire artist on shuffle. So for me the UI is not that big of a shortcoming. For someone who is frequently picking and choosing their songs this player would provide a pretty attrocious experience.

Is there a thread tracking remaining X3 bugs? There are still a few with mine that hopefully will get taken care in a future firmware release. Here are the ones in order of how "bad" they are for me:

1. Slow response going from track to track. Its very annoying because sometimes it doesn't respond so I press more times and then I skip too many tracks.

2. Glitch in the beginning of new song sometimes when selecting a new track. Sometimes the song starts after the first second or two.

3. Return key should return to next level up but sometimes returns all the way back to the home screen, meaning you have to start all over again if you want to listen to another album in that same area of your directory.

4. Slow scroll speed going through albums. Takes forever to scroll through card file directory.

5. No gapless in browser mode (think this is being addressed)

6. No Category > Artist > Album option. I.E all tracks from the same artist are lumped together. (I think James said this is not going to be changed?)

Anyone else have any other bugs? Maybe once we sort out the remaining bugs James can see if they can be fixed in the future.

Absolutely agree with point #1. I find it esp. bad going back. Many times I overshot a few tracks cause I didn't think the button press actually registered.

Can't say I've noticed any issues with the beginning of songs, although I've read others might have (possibly format related?)

Would also like to see the scroll speed get bumped up a fair bit (possible to add a speed option?)

Otherwise mines been running pretty stable (only ever had one freeze, and that was cause I was screwing round making themes), and I've gotten used to the quirks of the UI. Really can't complain....

Actually I do remember one possible issue. A few of my tracks (flac/alac)seem to make a faint click at times. I don't ever remember the songs having clicks originally, but I could be wrong (I usually end up forgetting which songs, and where they happen, so I can't ever check with the orig. source).

One more off topic question...How are you guys finding your battery life? I'm running all lossless files (some hi-res), and medium brightness, and my runtime seems to be well short of the 10 hrs. Even the LO seems to eat the battery fairly quick (BTW, I forgot what a proper LO sounds like - great job Fiio!) Just looking for some comparisons before I start to think my battery might be bad.

Thanks very much for taking the time to summarize!

Just got the X3 DAC software.

So far, lots of bugs, but it is indeed working and breaking my mind at just how much $190 can get you in a device that you can even personally mod now.

-> 6.) Yes, James hinted something like they wouldn't address this until they can "scavenge" the GUI from X5. Well, I think this is unnecessary (I didn't want to call it "ridiculous").

  • There is already an existing way for the X3 UI to react to a user selection and submit it to an SQL statement, I presume.
  • After selecting "Category -> Artist" we see a list of all artists in the media library. Now, selecting one of those artists should simply save the corresponding "artist_id" into a variable and hand it over to an SQL statement.
  • Then a simple SQL statement like "SELECT DISTINCT album_id, album FROM MEDIA_TABLE WHERE artist_id LIKE <selected_artist_id> ORDER BY album, album_id;" will list all albums of that particular artist.
  • From there everything continues like under "Category -> Album" but sort of "filtered" for the selected artist.
  • At least, if the "mysterious" operating system doesn't allow such requests or there are other strange restrictions, please at least list the tracks under "Category -> Artist" in a useful way, like this: "SELECT name FROM MEDIA_TABLE WHERE artist_id LIKE <selected_artist_id> ORDER BY album, name, ck_id" This would at least sort the tracks by albums, then track names and finally track numbers. This way even double-albums would be listed correctly.

At least since FW 1.31 (maybe before but I didn't notice because I nearly never used the file browser before then) there is something else I find odd: In "File Browser" mode all tracks are sorted by the <file creation date> attribute, which is complete nonsense. As a normal PC user one has no influence on that attribute except copying file-by-file. At least Windows sometimes "shuffles" the order in which files are created on the destination drive when copying whole folders. This is P.I.T.A. and could be corrected very simple by a standard alphabetical order. That way we could control the way the files are arranged in browser mode a lot easier.

That is cool!

We have about 50 users help us test the beta firmware, but I found it is not enough, for example, in China

99.9% used Windows OS , 99.9% used folder playback mode. 99.9% don't care about gapless playback, 90% of music have not Tags information or have wrong Tags information.

So, maybe some Western volunteers maybe a good idea, any good idea about this.

BTW, depend the test by myself,  Gapless playback has not problem in other playback modes.

i'm willing to test a number of features for you/us

i do care about gapless playback, my tags are all correct, i have 3005 files, mostly FLAC redbook, or ALAC redbook, a few MP3s, and some 24bit FLACs

Well, I am from Spain.

I use Linux in my computer (with a FiiO E10), the songs are tagged (almost  all are ripped from CD), usually I used the collection by album or file explorer (the files in m4a doesn't appear ordered by number track correctly in collection, the first appears the last). The format of the songs are M4A and FLAC (before the 80% was OGG but until the bug with this format is resolved ...). I think I am not using the gapless playback.

If you consider useful, I don't mind give a try.

I'd be happy to test it under Linux for you James.

All flac files.

James I would be happy to assist you in beta testing firmware. I currently have 10,000 FLAC files that have all artwork and tags correct and an additional 10,000 that are a mix of ALAC, MP3 and WAV that haven't been completely cleaned yet. I definitely care about gapless playback also as I have a ton of progressive rock files.
