I have a Rockboxed Clip+ and I love the way it sounds. It is able to scan a 32 GB card in less than a minute, it provides the ability to browse by Artist/Album (my preferred method), and it is very reliable. I have all my music organized as Music\Artist\Album on my music server and Clip+ SD card. I figured that since I have all my music saved as 16/44.1 FLAC files, maybe I should get the Fiio E07K. I just bought one and tried it as an amp for my Clip+ (when connecting to the auxiliary jack in my car). I know double amping is not the preferred method, but it sounds very good in my car. I did have to change the treble +2 and bass -2 to get a neutral sound to my ears. I also like the sound of the E07K as a DAC for my laptop.
I see that the X3 will have the DAC feature in a future FW upgrade. It is also a DAP with a good amp all inside a single device. Having a single device is convenient, but I worry about the complaints regarding scan times, having to re-tag files, having to change file names (or folder structures), issues with gapless playback, having folder browse instead of Artist/Album view, etc. If I have to work too hard to get a device to work, especially after being spoiled by the ease of use and reliability of my Clip+, I am hesitant to risk getting frustrated.
The X3 seems way further ahead compared to the issues I read about on the DX50 thread. I also think James is a good guy who stands behind his products. I am wondering if I should get the X3 and return my E07K. Has anyone else got a Clip+ amped with a E07K that can compare it to an X3 and offer feedback? Thanks is advance for any insight.
