You are not mistaken. If you initiate playback on the X3 through the Browse Files header in the UI then you will not get gapless playback. if you initiate playback through the Categories/Album headers then you can get gapless playback. This should be corrected in the next firmware upgrade. hopefully.

Gapless does not work for me at all, either via Browse Files or Category. Using ALAC files. A real nuisance. Hoping firmware fixes this.

for some cd rip in wav format, sometimes I cannot be bothered and just join the tracks in one big wav file...

I have been reading this thread with great interest.

I have a question.

I currently use a rockboxed ipod classic through a fiio amp, all my music is ripped to flac.

Would the X3 give me a big jump in sound quality?

James I think he's saying that gapless playback does not work for him at all with ALAC files in all modes (Browse Files or Category)

Are all of your files properly tagged? This was part of the issue for me. Once I properly tagged all of my files, flac and WAV, then i was able to get gapless playback via the categories/Album menu.

library browsing where instead of file names, it should be listing the music title instead and according to the track number in the tags.

getting the hardware right and the software wrong is a strong point of chinese brand eh?

Do you have the "Gapless" feature switched ON in the settings menu?

dumb question:

I would like to purchase a backup micro-usb to usb cable for my X3 - is the cord provided by Fiio proprietary? or can I use an aftermarket cable?  If I can use an aftermarket cable, then which one do I need and where can I find it?

Thanks -

Does anyone know if the X3's library database records the play history of tracks and is then able to sync that info back with Media Monkey? I'm using the WMDM (MTP/Windows devices) plugin from within Media Monkey's sync options... which is able to sync the play history... but i'm not seeing it syncing back into media monkey.

It's not proprietary. You can pick one up at any electronics store ie, best buy, wal mart, staples.

I use the one that came with my kindle smily_headphones1.gif

From the manual:

"Can X3 be recharged by other Micro USB data cable?

Yes. But the original data cable is specially made with power wire in large diameter which can reduce the wear and tear. Other non-original USB cable may result in slow charging speed. What’s worse, if it is very poor quality, it may unable to charge due to the high voltage loss."

So you can use almost any micro-usb cable but it may charge more slowly than with the supplied one. I use all sorts of different cables and they all work well enough but the supplied one is a *little* better than most of them. (And a *lot* better than the HP one I got with my touchpad....)

Based on what I've read, I'm under the impression that there would be a noticeable improvement, but not necessarily a big leap. If you're using the E17 with an LOD, it probably doesn't sound vastly different than the X3. I've heard the X3, but I haven't A/B'd it with an ipod+Fiio amp. It does give you the ability to play high res music (24bit / 96Khz and up), which may help you make a decision. They've been really on the ball about fixing the firmware and it seems like a very good device now, certainly good enough to consider making the switch.
