This being said. I also noticed more neutral phones synergizing better on the X3 more so than the DX50..So based on that info if any of you guys are wondering what Dap to get. I would base it on what phones you guys own more so than anything. Both have a great sound but will synergize much more so with phones that have the opposite in sound.

The funny thing is I can see many guys wanting more "neutrality" in their sound that will probably go with the DX50 but it will be the X3 that will synergize much better than the DX50 using neutral phones.

Using colored phones on the X3 is a no no by the way.. Will add a bit too much coloration to the sound. That is where the DX50 shines. Either way both are excellent but know that opposites attract when it comes to both these players.

I certainly agree with your assessment regarding the X.3. However, I don't think using it with warm headphones is a no-no. Obviously this is a subjective topic, but I thoroughly enjoy mine with my BA 200s and TPeos H200, both of which have a warm tilt to varying degrees.

I thought apple lossless m4a's were lossless (e.g., "Apple Lossless data is stored within an MP4 container with the filename extension .m4a"), but that's not my concern here.

I didn't know about indexing -- I'm used to an iPod and an older Creative player, on which you load them and they show right up. Also I'd've thought the time it took to transfer the files would've been enough for indexing, but I'll leave it playing and see if it indexes. (There are 2301 files in 161 folders on the 64GB card, 286 files in 26 folders on the internal storage.) (The Idle Poweroff max is 210s.)

It certainly SOUNDS good!

I have warm phones that sound great on the X3 as well but ends up sounding even better on the DX50 and neutral phones sound great on the DX50 but ends up sounding even better on the X3. This is how I got the best pairing out of both players.. The strengths of the players make certain phones truly shine while others are just ok. So while not a scientific fact or anything like that. This is generally the observation I have witnessed on both players. Thought it might help those that are on the fence of which Dap they want to purchase.

GR07BE sounds great using the X3 by the way.

Gotcha. Just didn't want anyone to be turned off to the X.3 because of their sound signature before even trying it.

I recently sold the BEs but I certainly agree with you. They were a great pair. Now I'm loving the pair between my H 200 and X.3

I think any phones with BAs in them in general will benefit from the X3 more so than the DX50 actually.

In most cases I'm sure you are right.

Both camps I have seen people saying their dap is better sounding than the other. Actually both camps are right. Ultimately it comes down to how good the player sounds with what ever phone you have.. Both players are heads and shoulders above your standard garden variety daps but when you get to this level of sound you definitely got to have the right synergy happening to truly take advantage of the sounds.

Guys that think their player don't sound as good to you than what you read on the threads.. Try a more neutral style phone on the X3. I am willing to bet it will surprise you just how good the pairing will sound to you.

For example. My Philips S2 is crazy on the X3. Some of the best sounds out of anything I own actually.

I bet the H200's sound great off of the DX50 as well. Looking forward to finding impressions/comparisons.

This is totally on point. Sudio monitors like the MDR-7520 syergize with the X3 very well. It tames the highs a bit and gives the bass and mids a fullness coloration that is very pleasing. I think you hit on the nail when you said the X3 mates well with neutralish phones. I can see how a heavily colored phone can be too much of a good thing, especially the bass.

Exactly. I love the BEs with the x3. Way more than my m100s.

On that point. Everyone around these parts know me for my AT earphone threads. The CKS1000 is one of the most musically colored immersive earphones on the planet. And what I mean by that is. It utilizes a dual air chamber that gives air and space, imagery, depth and stage to a forward sound that is nothing short of marvelous.. It sounds like poo on the X3. Lol. I was more than disappointed with the pairing but upon reading early impressions of the DX50 being more neutral I knew there was a good chance the CKS1K would pair much better with theDX50.. Man does it ever..

To be honest I am completely happy that both players have a different take on the WM8740 sounds. Makes owning both actually a good thing. I look at both as a Yin and Yang thing happening. You just gotta know what will flow better with which dap and you will be golden. On the off chance you have a more colored phones you want to use on the X3. Try a more neutral amp paired with the X3.

It is kinda funny but I have a feeling many of the guys on the DX50 thread is listening to the wrong dap.. Lol.. In this case. Neutral + Neutral= More neutral..A good thing if you swing that way I suppose..What is the off chance that many of those guys will own phones like the XB90 or a CKS1000, Onkyo IE-HF300 and the like to make that dap truly shine. Not likely..

Neutral + X3= Mind blown. (DX50 owners just don't know. Lol).. People blew over the same post I wrote here over there like I have no idea what I am talking about.. Now I know what is up with that thread. Not knowing is bliss. Lol.

Dsnuts, you are to blame for me getting the DX50, I was perfectly happy with the X3 until I started reading about how neutral the DX50 was. And how neutral earphones went with one and colored earphones with the other...

Dam you nuts!!!

 LOL!

Looking forward to the comparison. Thanks for your keen insights.

This is coming from a guy that owns 10x more phones and sources than I do..Like you wasn't gonna buy the other..:beerchug:

Actually for guys like Carlsan here that is truly a connoisseur of phones and owns more than your share of different types of sounding phones. I am gonna say it is worth getting both so good call.

But I digress this thread is not about the other it is all about the X3.. I do like the support of James and gang much more so here than the silent treatment the other thread gets..Great player James. I look forward to more greatness from your company I have zero doubts that the X5 is going to be excellent.

+1 for the neutral headphone pairing with X3.  and for once I would tend to focus on that more than the headphone's impedance as both daps can do pretty well in a wide range of values.

I still believe that more people will feel at ease with dx50's sound, but to me it is not better, just more conventional in imaging and signature.

the voices might be the most important thing, as the bassier sound of the X3 can be nicely tamed with the very simple but very good EQ. if the headphone is really lacking in the high mids like my ie80 is, then it might be better to go with the dx50. and vice versa, if the headphone has too much high medium (or neutral with compensated diffuse field blah blah blah "it's not neutral but we said it was") then the X3 could be better.

Am I missing something?
Define low bitrate please

Anything less than 16/44.1 flac.
