there is a play all listning all your songs, and you can just use play mode and set play mode to shuffle.

How to organize X3's Categories Artist section by Album and track:

http://www.head-fi.org/t/651769/fiio-x3-thread-full-review-http-www-head-fi-org-t-663600-impression-fiio-x3-high-fi-low-price/3375#post_9675408

Credit goes to Hoichi for giving me the brainstorm of this idea.

READ EVERYTHING before you try. So you know what will happen to your files and do a trial first before you try your entire library. I do not hold responsibility for you not doing a trial run or messing up these instructions. As these do modify your song file names.

Basically, in Categories-->Artist. When you click on an artist. The X3 organizes by numbers first then Alphabet, and then Asian characters. This means that all the albums and everything will be mixed up. All the first songs in the album will be there first followed by song 11 if there is one etc etc.

So how do you fix this?

Setup foobar and move all your music into one of its 'playlists'.

Then using hoichi's instructions

Quote:

You just open your whole library in a playlist, select all (Ctrl-A), right-click on any of the selected files and choose File operations->Rename to...

It opens a dialog, where you should click on an ellipsis next to the File name pattern field and choose

But instead of 'whatever' as he originally stated, copy and paste the following into the field of File Name pattern:

Quote:
%album% %tracknumber%. %title%

This makes it so that ALL your songs will now be named by Album track number and then title

BEWARE! As this means your ENTIRE music library will now follow this format. This is only a problem to those that are meticulous by how their files look. Keep in mind, this only changes file name. Not anything else. So your list should still look nice and neat. Do this on a sample two or three albums and decide for yourself if you want to continue.

As you can see, id3 tags are still there(the boxes not showing letters are because those are asian letters) and its only the file name that is different.

KEEP IN MIND that because the X3 scrolls uber slow, you need to abbreviate your album titles. All my album titles were abbreviated and or shortened so that I can see what song is what

So look at the picture above, I abbreviated all my albums to JPB, Love song, my life, earth etc etc

Categories-->Artists and now I'm down to Alan

Entering into her artist folder, you can now see my Album 'Back(I abbreviated) followed by track number and song title.

Now the album 'Back' goes into a new album called 'Earth' of which is kept in order thanks to me using Album/Track number/Track title

Album 'Earth' ties into JPB etc etc

etc etc

If this helped you or you like me and wish to thank me. Please use and hit the 'upvote' thumbs up button in the bottom right corner of this post and leave me a message. I'm trying to get on Head-Fi thumbs up leaderboards....so yeah. Panda says so, so you may as well do it since you read this far already.

If that doesn't help you click the button. Hopefully this does

TOO MUCH BASS, cant stand it. But they would be perfect for lawnmowing and/or exercising, or maybe a plane, and that is exactly what i was going for. Drown out the drone of the lawnmower. Im only hesitant about it because i dont want the ath-m50's already slightly overwhelming bass to become more overwhelming. but considering the completely flat response of the Fiio E11/ipod LOD and the equally flat response of the X3, i dont think i should have any issues. Actual listening impressions come later. Theres plenty of albums I want to run through this on my ATH-m50. Normal headphones for reference are HD650's.

Yeah, I think i'll just use browse files for now (thank GOD for that) and perhaps make a .m3u in each folder for quick album queueing. And for other stuff its easy enough to do a shuffle. I rarely do a "custom shuffle", i either shuffle everything or i listen to an album front to back or i shuffle an album. or i'll shuffle an artist. and the fiio makes it easy enough to accomplish all of that even in this state.

  1. Additional Accessory. Asians LOVE accessories and covers. Also helps in terms of making the X3 less slideable and protect the metal from scrapes(metal casing scratches easy if it hits other metal).
I would have liked a plastic case or a tighter fitting silicon one. At this low of a quality, id say lower the price and dont bother.
  2. They are getting this stuff custom made so yeah, not exactly $20 Screen Guard quality for 3 screen protector strips
Hey, im just stoked they put one on for me.
  3. It has already been mentioned by FiiO to format to FAT32 if the card doesn't work at first.
Yeah, i got that. It was confusing at first. I'm real interested to see how a 64 gig card handles fat32. Seems like there shouldnt be problems according to otherposts in this thread.
  4. I'm getting 7MB/s. I am using Class 10, 16GB Micro SDHC. The USB 2.0 format and other implementations causes this. Most USB 2.0 flash drives write at about 7MB/s as well. There is nothing that needs fixing. Test out a USB 2.0 flash drive you have sititng around(I just did). They write at around the same speed. It only seems longer because now, you aren't dropping word documents onto a USB 2.0 device, but tens of GB's of songs.
I'm using class 2. Internal storage also got 5. My usb flash drives get about 15, ipod gets about 11, HDD gets about 24.
  5. No headphones included..yes and?
It was just odd. THis was an impressions thing, this isnt a complaints thing. Actually i like that they didnt bother because they knew who their target market was.
  6. The language is a bit off yes. FiiO isn't Apple. the mass majority of Chinese audiophile companies(big portion of the market) have the same language problems.
I'd like to have them send a form to people and have people put down what the english words SHOULD be. pretty easy to fix with user input.
  7. This makes it easier to know what goes where for you personally.
I'm wondering if i could use this as a way to keep audiobooks seperate from regular stuff, but i cant figure out how i would mark my position on audiobooks.
  8. Yes, this is a UI thing that annoys many people including me.
grrrrrrr such an easy fix from a programming perspective......
  9. You can try the trick mentioned before in terms of using windows to re-arrange how a song shows up.
Which trick is this? what post number?
  10. Yeah, their scroll is really slow. Solution? Put the album number in front of the album
Or, just make an option to scroll faster or slower. Its just an int or float or w/e, simply add the menu item entry to make it a user modifiable value and bind it to the +/- button in increments.

Last they said, they could not make it open source due to lisencing issues with the original creator/s of the base UI or something. Rockbox and all these other UI alternatives have already been mentioned and shot down

Replied inline.
Also, i see your trick. I might consider that, or i might just use the manual folder method to navigate for now.

Bollocks. Well, rockbox may have been shot down as an officially supported thing but that doesnt mean it wont happen. I find it hard to believe there isnt SOMETHING they can release taht would make it easy for people to help develop.

It was shot down pretty hard by both FiiO not being able to release the code and the difficulty of it or something.

Yes, I have been able to get about 15MB/s as well on a flash drive, but this depends on many factors of which in terms of moving songs, I can get a stable 7MB/s with one of the most bought 'geek' flashdrives abailble. The Patriot Xporter XT

Quick question: how random is the shuffle function?

Like, will it shuffle in a pre determined order every time i shuffle, or will it decide what to play each time you make it shuffle?

I remember when i shuffled my 2nd gen ipod touch, it would go through a predetermined list of songs, and thus i heard the same songs every time i used shuffle. (This was eventually fixed)

Completely random from what I can tell.

http://lifehacker.com/5929611/why-itunes-shuffle-isnt-random-and-how-to-fix-it

This is probably what you are talking about I think where the iPod will create an auto list and if you start from Song number 23 on that list with 'shuffle' turned on, it will just go to its random listed song number 24 which is not in the same album but is always the same right?

I just tried this with one song in play all, and going back and playing from that song gave me a different next song each time so I will say it's random.

How did you get songs onto the SD in the first place?

Did you format the mSD card beforehand to FAT32? (formating destroys inside contents(no it doesn't actually, but we don't need to go into this right now))

Nope I don't, only the X3.

I used my Clip+.

Perhaps it doesn't work too well with USB 3.0? I noticed that Sansa doesn't

Okay, superb!

About the iPod: this was pre-iOS4.2.1 i believe. Back then even when "re shuffling" you would get the very same list. Now not anymore.
After my X3 will arrive, i probably won't use my iPhone for audio playback anymore anyway wink.gif

Thank you, Panda man

Yes, FiiO X3 and some USB 2.0 devices of this sort will have trouble with USB 3.0

Please try this with USB 2.0 port OR on another computer as this 'issue' may be at the cause of the USB controller.

It is mentioned in the FiiO FAQ that USB 3.0 ports will have problems with the X3.

FAQ section below

Quote:
Why the computer can’t recognize X3?
Since WIN8 operating system and USB 3.0 are n technology applied area, X3 is not perfect
enough in supporting them. But we would solve this issue ASAP by upgrading firmware. In
short-term, the solution would be keep in line with WIN7 and WIN XP system and USB 2.0 type.

out of 10 and for audio quality alone, how would you score the x3 and clip+?

I just got mine today from the Australian dealer. Arrived overnight.. Excellent...

Out of the box X3 sounds a bit edgier than I expected but definitely not a dull boring player. It's an excellent value for money against the more expensive DAPs. 192/24 files play really well.

I should have read the reviews more carefully about no metadata tag support for AAC/ALAC. This is really annoying since I have all my music purchased or ripped as ALAC.

I guess I can transcode to FLAC before transferring, but it's a stupid effort just to get metadata and cover art. I hope they add AAC/ALAC tag support via firmware update soon.

Cool beans, I'll do that when I get off work in a couple of hours

I believe i read in this thread somewhere that you can use the tags if you edit them with id3tag editors and change them to v3.2(?) ID3 tags.

EDIT: as i can't seem to find it i might've misread it, or confused it with something else.
