Well this is a very complex issue, nothing is right or wrong.

If there is a demand and there is supply no matter how high the price you need to pay for.

Sorry, if this is a bit off the topic in this thread. :)

Exactly, I have given up supporting any firm that overcharges for its products no matter how great it might be. I'll happily spend 5k on a Stax rig because it's worth it but I won't spend a tenth of that if the product doesn't justify the price.
I look at the overall scenario and the engineering behind the product too and Fiio seems to be great for the price. Getting my sister a headphone setup with an E17.

Can the similar modification be implemented to Fiio X3?

The 8740 and 8741 are not pin compatible. Because of the DSD pins some other pins are differently aranged. It would be possible, but very difficult (a DIY guys view on this).

There is no need to do this. There would not be much difference. Well lmaybe less bsttrry life.

Why is that?

It's the fastest route to unbiased facts but head-fi rules deem it illegal except for in sound science.

How is that bad?

Never really paid attention to the rules, finding it hard to wrap my mind around.

Oh wells.

Back on topic, this player looks awesome, and decently priced! Already asked this on another thread, but would it be a good upgrade to the Clip+, and where can I purchase it?

Look how many sponsors head Fi has. That should answer your question.

Which is why 'reviews' on Head-fi are so often... errr.... how shall I put this...?  Of 'uncertain pedigree...'

Conflicts of interest run exceedingly deep...

Personally, sponsors or no sponsors, I see no benefit in actively penalising members for running blind comparisons (provided the comparisons are sincerely-intended, rather than a thinly-veiled smear campaign), although there will, of course, always be room for bias, even then, in terms of exact testing methodology and user preferences. So, it still remains a crapshoot, but penalising honest attempts at comparison is no way to solve the matter, IMO.

Anyway, for the likes of Fiio, I don't think there is much to worry about - engage with your customers and implement as many of their requirements as reasonably possible, produce a good quality offering, and price the product fairly, and there is little to be concerned about if such a product is compared to a competitor's product, even if the competing product is at a different price point.    What I mean is that a fairly-priced product, designed and manufactured sincerely, remains a fair purchase, plain and simple. It legitimately stands its own ground at its own level.   I don't mean that everyone who buys an X3 or X5 will necessarily love it, but even if they don't, they should still feel it is an honest product that hasn't ripped them off. But when a product is greedily priced (this does not apply to Fiio), it rightly deserves to be compared to more fairly-priced offerings, and if those more fairly-priced offerings should happen to make the greedily-priced offering blush in embarassment then so be it, even if the embrassed product might happen to be from a sponsor.

Anyway, politics aside, and getting back to the topic of this thread, I'll be passing on the X3 (though I may buy my mum one). I'm personally looking at the DX50 and/or X5.

There will be a battle of Wolfson W8740 DAC among X3, AK100 and DX50.

So everything I've been reading that I thought were objective reviews have been biased garbage?

What's real?

Is anything?

There's no such thing as objective review. Even measurement can differ depending on the equipment used.

You should take everything with several grains I mean pounds of salt.
