What do you think about connecting X3 to an amp through the headphone out, not the line out?
I do not really hear any disadvantage in sound with 'double amplification', and using X3's EQ to add a little bass at certain genres seems quite beneficial to me...

I thought it works as follows

1) using the headphone out we are using from the X3  DAC+AMP

2) using the line out  only DAC (including bass and treble settings)

3) SPDIF out, raw data, NO DAC, NO AMP.

A lot of people do that with the X3 so they can have a little EQ, it's all up to you as there are no hard rules.

1) Correct

2) Line out is direct from the DAC with NO Bass / Treble controls or AMP

3) Exactly the same as #2 but using a different transport medium. (Coax)

@Pituky     re. 2)... The tone controls don't seem to affect the line out on my X3. I tried, just to check, because Presonus monitors have LF response only down to 70Hz and it sounds lacking.

@bestula    It might help if you are not critical about the sonic contribution of the amp section. It gives a way to have control over the level. See: http://www.head-fi.org/t/651769/the-fiio-x3-thread/11355#post_10703851

Sorry, slightly OT, but in that post you mention Fado Guitar, and I think you posted a track in Portuguese a while back, which suggests to me you might know a bit about Fado. I've been enjoying a Mariza concert I recorded a while back, and I have a few Cesario Evora albums but that's about the limit of my knowledge of that genre. Do you have any other recommendations I should try?

@TrollDragon   I have to agree with Pituky on 3). I mean there IS a difference between serial data and audio. No?

Don't plug your tube amp into the serial out port.  Well, you know this!

Hey, it's OK. All about good sounds for X3. I had posted 3 tracks of Mariza.:p  But I deleted them already. The guitar album I have is Custodio Castelo; The Art of the Portuguese Fado Guitar, which I really enjoy. I wanted some Fado with no vocals, since I have enough Mariza and she is my honey. Love the sound of the Portuguese guitar and the ensemble arrangements. Some may not like this sound. But you can preview it online.

Yea I always thought that SPDIF sends digital data, without being converted to analog signal by the DAC.

I'was thinking to connect the x3 Coaxial out, to the SPDIF coaxial input on my Sony Receiver, later just to try.

Then from the X3 line out out to some analog input on the Sony receiver.

Just to see differences in sound....

But I see i will do something wrong.

Thanks, I'll give Custodio Castelo a try. (and I agree with you about Mariza...)

Oh, there is no problem with that test. S/PDIF is a widely used standard digital audio interface. And surely the Sony Receiver selects only one input at a time. So if you hook up both signal paths at the same time, you could switch back and forth between inputs for an A-B comparison without any troubles. Another nice test.

BTW. I hope you changed your mind about buying that Hollywood surplus crap. Probably something some set dresser stole off of a Sound Stage. No telling WHAT it really is. :confused_face_2:

Yeah, you never know when I'm joking. Read this: http://www.tnt-audio.com/clinica/diginterf1_e.html

The digital data comes off of Pin 21 on the 8740 no? So the DAC is still in the loop as the data would then pass onto a transceiver chip for the coax connection. The DAC just doesn't do any heavy lifting at that point...

Edit: Yes I see where your both coming from with the RAW Data.
