The Fiio X3 Thread. - Page 755

Yes my thread was aimed at Micro, but it was in no way meant sarcastically or rudely (hence my no troll line, as I am aware people are touchy about this subject).

You see many people I respect say different things. On the one hand some say they can tell a difference, others say they can't. Abx testing seems to be the only real scientific approach (and leave out placebo and opinion and stick to facts, hence why I asked if u had done any abx testing and if so what yer results might be).

I have heard some say it depends on genre. One guy I knows is into dnb and says he can tell difference between FLAC and 320, and now you here also say Jazz is a place where these differences are noticeable.

I am yet to try a hi res device, or play WAV/FLAC. I have done a little abx testing at home, but not enough extensively. I aim to try in the near future.

I'm just trying to gather intel, that's all.

I suspect the best advice I can offer on this is it is a person by person case.  Some people can hear a difference, some cannot.  Think of it kind of like taste:  some people can pick out the individual flavors in wine, some people taste wine.

Hi Bruce,

I just chimed in before because I have seen too many threads get locked, people warned and banned over these things.

I have to say, you are going about it the right way (knowledge vs. debate).

The lossless vs. lossy battle will forever go on.  What most people don't realize is that the battle is over before it even begins.

Example-  Let's say you don't hear a difference between 320k mp3 and lossless, but Micro does.  It does not matter what you or Micro do, say or prove to quantify your beliefs.  You will go on a three page debate and one of you will eventually take the high road and say "we will continue to agree to disagree" and life will go on.  You will continue to listen to your mp3s and Micro will continue to listen to his lossless and the world will be a better place.  It really is that simple.

Bruce, when I meant you, I did not literally mean yourself, just using an example since you and Micro were discussing the issue.

Once people come to terms with- "everyone's gear and ears are different and the more resolving your gear is the more you will be able to tell a difference".....

Until then the lossless vs. lossy, hi-rez vs. redbook and cables make a difference debates will never end.

Cheers!

There is also a whole Sound Science "Fiction" section on Head-Fi where you can discuss the Lossy vs Lossless till the cows come home, this is where THAT discussion belongs, along with cables, fuses, equipment "burn-in" etc...

Grow some thick skin before you enter the Sound Science Asylum! :D

Bruce asked for more detail so I gave it up. I was however being sarcastic with my demand for the proper response to the very subjective question of 'hearing sample rates' etc. etc. Now someone has to flog me for my use of cheap ***** Panasonic portable headphones. Surely this is not acceptable?

Lossless FTW.

Lossy FTW.

Keep any format you prefer as long you happy. I listened to both. :D I do notice some different in 320 kbps vs 16bit flac but it's not HD600 vs Q701 kind of different. It's only noticeable when I compare and analyze the track. But I listen to relax, I don't listen to analyze and do comparison. Sit, listen, and drink... So, I'm the winner, not the hater that keep bashing.

Hey Micro,

Did you mean flag?  (little red flag to the left that people press when they think things are improper in a post).  Your post was not improper at all and you were stating what you heard.

Yes I understand what yer saying, it's a bit like an argument between an atheist and a christian. FWIW I am undecided, please don't take my position as 'non believer', it's why I'm here looking at this X3 thread.
Truth be told I woulda bought the X3 from B&H on the weekend (it was reduced to $149), but the lack of M3U and poor Favorites integration was a deal breaker. But I am told (directly from Fiio via fb) that these things are on the cards so perhaps in the future once the FW is produced I will grab the DAP. At the moment im looking at the Hires from a more features perspective rather than major selling point. In the meantime I aim to try some more abx testing at home (when the kids give me enough time to do it!)

Yes my apologies, I'll try not to derail the thread into yet again one of those discussions.

X5 playlists are coming along nicely and I imagine they'll make their way to the X3 (not confirmed though).

No, I meant flog as in a good whipping. I should be so crass as to reject mp3 while listening with $4 headphones. LMAO!

Oh, but these Panasonic headphones are amazing. I just have to put treble at -3 and bass at +3 or +4 maybe but they are amazingly clear. People look at you strange when you go around with headphones on anyway but what if I wore something like these ABYSS headphones? I would probably get arrested. OK maybe it is my engineering knowledge that prejudices me to the sound of mp3. But I only bought my X3 because I don't like mp3 and want to play wave files. So how do I resolve that if I admit that I can't really tell the difference.

Yes, I deserve a good flogging. With psychoacoustic wave threads. Only to the head of course.

Trolldragon I was not imagining that both my X3 and my X5 did not sound so good out of the box but after a good bit of play both sounded much better. I wouldn't call it break in improvement, I'll call it inspired by confidence.
