The current X3 firmware core is pretty much the same as X5, minus the difference in UI and a few of the features (i.e. EQ).

Personally I still find X5 to be a superior player without a doubt.

Thanks for the summary Marlene, that's very helpful in telling me what to look out for during tests. Just to repeat my question, is the SQ of the E07K same as the X3, or rather, how different it is from the X3's?

With firmware 3.0 it´s not that different anymore from the E07K. Stage is wider and more holographic, the E07K sounds more compact and flatter. Additionally, the Andes feels as if it diminishes very deep bass & very high treble slightly. But that´s about it I think. Anyone else has additional input?

EDIT: maybe dynamics are closer to the original sound on the X3. Though I´m not entirely sure yet.

Now that I think of it... since owning the E07K I wanted to have its sound combined with a DAP. Seems I finally got my wish - and more! :D

I imagine you're right ClieOS, but cost vs performance, I'd be willing to believe the X3 is currently the better value.  Although, I wish the X3 had the same type of harness for the E12 the X5 does.

But I disagree about 3.0 being more neutral, dynamic, and detailed than 2.14b.  My perception is that with 3.0, the warmth is forward and veils the mids to a greater degree, and it's slower and less dynamic.
This is actually what I heard upon first listening.
I did the entire RAM album on the beta before updating to 3.0. Then immediately listened to it again.
Your impressions describe how I felt with the Headphone out.
Out 2 of the C&C using line out only helped slightly, but the same affect on the Mids was apparent.
While I preferred the overall SS of 2.14b, it still had issues mentioned here. Add on top of those issues a pile of stability problems. I'll take the increased stability and hope later updates offer revisions to the sound.

Hmmm... Now I am more tempted to get a X3, but what does having a holographic soundstage mean? Also, anyone have compared the X3 (in FW 3.0) with the E17 (asking since the X3 is using components from the E17)?

after upgraded new FW3.0... the x3 pair very well with my UM mentor....almost feel like better than my x5 on fw2.0 ....

'Holographic stage' means that the stage doesn´t reach from left to right only, but also from the front to the rear. Or that you´re able to - with your virtual ´listening self´ at the center of the image/stage - more or less precisely pinpoint the distance of some sound.

Naturally, since we are talking about headphones, this virtual self is entirely in your head, and so is this stage.

It is - in my humble opinion - the most 'correct' sounding firmware for the X3 yet. And soundwise it is a huge step from 2.1 to 3.0 and a smaller step from 2.14b to 3.0.

For all the doubters, here is a little summary:

Sound of 1.x - 2.1:

  • flat and constricted stage, soloists seem to take a few steps back from the microphone
  • diminished upper bass, mids and lower treble -> leaving deep bass and high treble
  • dynamics suffer from muted mids
  • far from the original sound of the files it plays
  • perceived frequency response feels unbalanced
  • not very colourful sound, definitely not audiophile

Sound of 2.14b - 2.xxb:

  • holographic stage
  • stage is slightly instable, instruments move around a bit
  • less deep bass and high treble - because upper bass, mids and lower treble are back
  • much more balanced perceived frequency response
  • more details
  • perfect dynamics with some slight added aggressiveness
  • very colourful sound
  • some slight 'glare' at high mids / low treble

Sound of 3.0:

  • holographic stage with correct dimensions
  • stage is completely stable, instruments are 'glued' to their places
  • perfectly balanced perceived frequency response (maybe there´s a touch of warmth)
  • the same amount of details as before - they´re just not so much 'in-your-face'
  • perfect dynamics
  • neutral sound
  • glare completely gone

In short, after firmware 3.0 this simply is the best portable player I own. And I own many, which, in some cases, have been superior to the X3 before (using firmware <2.1). I have no idea, how FiiO could change the sound without me being able to measure it but it´s a fact that they did. And the improvement is so huge that I feel that every review written to this day should be rewritten... because they´re all wrong now.

The X3 now is not only the best DAP I have, it´s also one of the best sources I have. There´s only one device that´s better: the Xonar Essence STX. And the difference is not that big. This truly is remarkable, especially after I considered selling it until a month ago because of its mediocre sound quality. Firmware 2.14b already shattered the idea of selling, firmware 3.0 crushed it completely.

IMO, Astell&Kern, iBasso and Sony can pack their bags. And FiiO too... because, in all honesty... I feel that the X3 is superior to the X5 (judging from what I´ve heard when I had the preview model).

When not talking about sound the firmware has so far been a delight. Fast, responsive, free of bugs. If there´s one thing I don´t like too much it´s that the cover art is resized to (I assume) 300x300 px and cropped because it doesn´t fit. But that´s it.

Very well done, FiiO.

 Crap. I gave my X3 to my wife when I got my X5. She's heard about FW3.0 and asked me to update this weekend.

If X3 SQ better than X5 ... how to switch DAP with her??? What to do??? Gotta get my evil trickster cap on, man.....

Head-Fi drives me crazy, keeps me poor and messes with my productivity in the office. Damn! Why am I still here???

Honey, I've been thinking, and I love you very much.  How about I give you the X5 so you can truly enjoy your music, and I'll take the X3.  I love the way the X5 sounds, and I want to share that with you, I hope you love it too.

The wait is finally over. I think that sq is superior on 3.0 than 2.14b. True, 2.14b seemed to have a little bit of more resolution or micro-detail, but I feel it was artificially exaggerated. Hearing with my T90s or T1s I could really feel some roughness in the treble (those are very fast to catch these problems). For more warmer and laidback headphones, such as my hd650 or my p7, the 2.14 could seem to be better, but I believe that 3.0 is spot-on. I couldn't say it does anything wrong.

In addition lookups when using shuffle are fixed among other things.

Now if FIIO could release a sw tool for editing the favorites playlist in the pc that would be great considering that there is no other playlists support.

Where's that tight bass? 2.14b sounds better by far.

It's in the jeans. Oops, I mis-read your posts ... didn't notice the "b" in front of "bass".

Sorry, stress getting to me. taking a few minutes out from work to read Head-Fi.

Ah I see, thanks, glad to learn something new today!
