Hi there

this is my first post - been reading this site for about 6 months - I have an excellent home theater system so appreciate good sound - just starting to get into personal listening with headphones

I have used a pair of Koss PortsPros for last 6-10 months and looking to upgrade

I have narrowed my first headphone choices to the Shure SHR840 and the Vmoda M80

I can get either pair used for a reasonable price 

I have listened to the 840's and really like the sound - I'm not into heavy bass (but do want some there) - and my 55 years old ears appreciate the forward sounding mids and highs

Many comments on the forums suggest the M80's are also very good sounding

My listening is varies from top 40 pop and country to classic pop and country from the 60's and 70's

I only listen on my smartphone - nothing amplified - not yet anyway

The 840's are large but fit me ok - the M80's look smaller - do they fit better?

I will only be listening at home so portability of the headphones really doesn't matter

Also sound isolation is not a major requirement

Any and all comments would be appreciated and are very welcome

From your two choices, I would say they are two different types of headphones sonically and aesthetically. So, starting with the Shures:

 

From what I remember these headphones are more mid centric headphones with good detailed highs and good bass. I would say of your two choices, these will sound more clear and detail. Soundstage on these will also be better than V-Moda's. They are a little big, and can be a little fatiguing on the ears after awhile, but they are decently comfortable. Depending on your ear size, the V-Moda's might snug your head a bit more if your ears are on the smaller size. One thing I should point out is that the M-80 is consider a on-ear headhphone, and the SRH840 is over-ear. On some people the V-Moda's might be just big enough to wrap around your ears, if they are small enough, so keep that in mind.

 

As far as the V-Moda's are concerned they are a bit different sonically, and IMO not even close to audiophile grade sound. They are slightly V-Shaped with deep and impactful bass, slightly recessed mids, and sparkly highs (some reports of sibilance). The sharpness usually depends on the type of music and the recording quality. If your music library is of low quality you might have some trouble with the treble on these. The strength of the V-Moda's is their bass. They are marketed for the younger crowd so, deep and impactful bass is usually the run-of-the mill sound for that crowd. So you will hear good body in the lower end. That being said, detail and soundstage is not so good. Neither headphones are going to give you that excellent sound stage like a open-back headphone would, but of the two the Shures are much better.

 

With all that being said, is there a reason why you have chosen these two? Are you looking only for closed-back headphones?

If noise iso or leakage is a concern, you might want to look into some open-backed, especially if they are only for home use. Usually, open-back will deliver much better sound overall, and will give you better detail.

I am considering the closed backs because I also listen in bed for about 30 minutes before going to sleep - helps relax me and not think of the work day - so I don't want to disturb my wife - although she said the Koss's didn't bother her very much - I listen at lower volume in bed.

I am also open to other suggestions in closed back but am looking for similar or better sound than the 840's - like I said I've listened to them and really enjoy the sound and now that you mentioned it I really liked the wide soundstage of them - really shows up on late 60's - 70's music when stereo was the thing

So I am leaning to the 840's but will spend more for better quality sound

I have been reading here for a while and realize that everyone has their preferences and everyone hears differently but will listen to all opinions
