Earsonics SM64: The Impressions Thread - Page 77

So spent the last week listening to these.  I've noticed that they are somewhat fatiguing for me... I think that sub-bass boost/rumble may be causing it.  Also does anyone else feel like the bass sounds a little too forward.  They don't mask the mids but they make the mids sound further away to me.

ericr: the phonak tips would definitely be worth looking into imo.  I like the modified meelec tips a bit better just cause they fit like a glove for me (phonaks fit extremely comfortably as well).  The phonaks seem to make the sound even more clear/airy (compared to stock and westone star tips).  They don't emphasize the bass like star tips do.  Overall they sound really crisp and clear, they seem to bring out the texture of the instruments.

For those that prefer the SM64 to the w40/w4r would you say the w40's do anything better than the sm64s?  Would you consider the westones 'smoother'.

Not sure I can nail down why but I much prefer the sound signature of these to my W4R's I owned. It isn't a tip thing because I use the same tips for both. The Westone's may be a bit smoother but the SM64's seem to "know" when the treble should kick in as well as the sub bass. Overall for my listening this is a more enjoyable listening experience. When it comes down to it it really depends on if you enjoy a certain sound signature because it is producing the same for me and you. I may just like one more than another.  I really liked my w4r's over my UM3x and many liked the UM3X better. At equal price points I think it comes down to do you like their sound. I would love to try the Phonak tips, I haven't found them in large, one company said they had them but once in the cart they couldn't complete the order, so they didn't really have large.

I am listening to a HD Flac version of Aerosmith Rocks as we speak and using my SM64's and wow. I am using the Comply P100's

Would any of you phonak guys be willing to trade for some Weststone stars or some MH1 tips?

Well I have some new Phonak tips in large and would like to give the MH1 tips a try. What size/sizes do you have for trade?

I've got multiple complete sets of the MH1 tips, but I need small or medium phonaks

give Jaben Audio in Melbourne a call and ask for the Hippo Phonak Tips. They are the same tips. They are advertised for $10 on thier website for 3 pairs (s, m l), i got them for $5 including postage to Sydney.

I just contact to them and they said it's not phonak original, it comes from the third party but can be same quality. Do you have any comment in yours :)

Where did you get the large tips from? I need large and can't find them.

Hi guys, I'm wondering which has better synergy with the SM64, AK100 or dx50?

earphonesolutions still sells the genuine phonak tips fyi... they only carry the multi-packs (1x SM, M, L) though.  I just got off the phone with Adriana there and the pack cost $15 (kinda steep but I guess they are rare now).

subguy812: Thanks for the detailed response.  I ended up sending mine back today in exchange for the W40s... But I completely agree with your assessment.  The sub-bass especially has a really special decay on these.  For me though, I think it was a bit too much bass and a bit too much 'texture' throughout that made the sound a little stark and jarring for me.  Hope the W40s work out but I have to say that I was very glad to have tried the SM64s and when finances allow, I would definitely be interested in the S-EM6s.

I think I bought the last of the large from soundearphones.com.  Earphonesolutions.com has them in stock.  They are a bit pricy at $15.99 + $5.00 shipping for 3 pair and a cleaning tool, but the shipping stays at $5.00 if you order multiple sets or sizes.

Also, these seem to last forever which is nice in contrast to foam tips.

any aftermarket cables that improve on the SM64? I'm looking for something to make them sound even more full. Using DX50 as source.

I cannot comment on cables, but I think the general consensus is that the SM64 is a rather full sounding IEM as it is. Are you listening on mid or high gain through the DX50?
