An imod iPod will probably be your best bet. If you have a 4th or 5th gen iPod you can have that modified to a supposed world class setup

For giggles, why do you want to use iTunes? To me its by far the worst part of the apple system. For my personal use, drag and drop is far easier and more intuitive. Obviously your mileage varies, I'm curious as to the draw?

I have a lot of classical music in excess of 200gb most of which I bought on itunes.

The problem is that the files' names overlap a lot as I have many renditions of the same compositions by different performers and it's an ABSOLUTE NIGHTMARE trying to sync all of this as well as changing the formats of different audio files....

There are number of DAPs play DRM free itune AAC format like Sony Walkmen, Samsung Galaxy Players, Archos, Philips go gear and they can sync with itune music folder in windows(drag n drop). I will recommend Sony Walkmen because they has internal dedicated digital AMPs for improved soundquality through HP jack and it can further improve with external AMPs help through WM_Port(dedicated line out).

How does the iMod hold up against the likes of Cowons like J3? I have heard that it is not worth the money.

As long as it is paired with a good amp pairing, the imod reportedly can challenge old 2000 dollar audiophile cd player. Which is still used until now

'Reportedly' is the key word :S

Reportedly is the keyword in anything , since most of the time you have no way to access the equipment you want to buy ,but in general the repprt have been favourful to the imod
