iPod 6g 80GB - E17 combo- not satisfied - recommendations?

Hi,

Yesterday I did some listening on my new setup Rockboxed iPod Classic 6G with the Fiio E17 via Fiio LOD. Used the AKG K550 for the occasion while I normally listen using Shure SE215.

Though not entirely bad sound missed some air, soundstage and was a bit dark. I plugged my Macbook Air to feed it with exact samen music through the USB E17 DAC to confirm. After that tried some listening through the Shure SE215 and it was even more unpleasant to my ears. Probably to the extent that I could only do shorter listening sessions. Tried the Macbook-E17-SE215 before which was actually quit good for the IEM. Though using the K550 in that combination rocked ;)

So I want a portable rig, though I can use the macbook sometimes. But would like to upgrade SQ to be able to enjoy.

What would be the best route to upgrade?

replace dap?

replace fiio E17

replace shure SE215 headphone?

Have some 400 Euro in mind but less would be grade of course. If you have some advice please also include some make/model of the proposed DAP, DAC/AMP or headphone.

thxs in advance

I used to own an iPod 6th gen classic. It was nice with my Shure IEMs if a liitle colourful and perhaps a liitle dark. It did not get on with my over the ear full size headphones, sounding rather harsh and thin. 6th gen - e17- shure 215s should be quite pleasant, you could upgrade the IEMs to SE425/535. AKG K550s would be better with a different source. I still like my old iPod Classic 5th gen. You could get an 80GB one of these used. With my Classic I noticed that an external amp. didn't make a great deal of difference. Music file compression obviously makes a difference, 320kbps mp3 for IEMs and lossless for full sized headphones.

I did use flac files on both csuse the ipod is rockboxed. Normally of course the k550 are uswd at home. But for the comparison i usws them because the have a far richer experience. Will look at the 425 maybe. Replace the e17 wouldn't be better ?

Previously I also took interest in westone 3 would that be a viable option? Also reading al lot bout Heir headphones over here.

Rsa, Leckerton also seems to get thumbs up in here as amp and or amp/dac combo. Some proper lod probably needed.

I mentioned the Leckerton earlier but because I've not digital out on the iPod a pure amp would be better not?

Would a Alo RX MK2 be a better option in that case? Or is preparing for a future DAP with digatal out be better, so the Leckerton UHA-6S MKII would be best?

At the moment I'm already looking in some Shure SE425 as sugested as well.

If you like the e17 you can wait for the fiio x3 to hit the markets. The x3 has very similar hardware to the e17 but it's a dap.

Maybe you can sell your old e17 then but i don't think you can use the x3 as a dac.

+1. First IEM's, then amp and dap the last.

Replace the E17 the source is ok, I suggest taking a look at this $100 C&C BH Amp.

http://www.head-fi.org/t/644363/c-c-bh-portable-headphone-amp-80-hours-from-a-single-charge-buyer-review

And at the same time replace the SE215 (if possible) !

You should have a custom title above your contributor badge...."I hate Sansa and FiiO"

Will dive some more into this. Like the idea about upgrading the IEM. On the shortlist now are:
  • Shure SE425 (210-220 EUR)
  • Westone 3umx (310 EUR via import, over here hard to get)
  • Shure SE535 (325 EUR via import, 360 EUR NL)

Maybe go for SE42 for now and upgrade LOD.

LOD options, don't think a >125 EUR LOD is needed ;)

  • any1 experience whith these? http://eace.webs.com/apps/webstore/products/show/3383542
  • Bit more expensive ALO green or L.O.D. Copper 22
  • Or custom mades, sugestions?
  • Maybe start soldering my own..lol but no experience yet. Would probable first cost money before I can save some..

Upgrade amp/Dac later maybe (sorry if I go al over the place):

  • ALO Rx MkII
  • JDS C5
  • RSA Tomahawk
  • Leckerton UHA-6S MKII (AMP/DAC)
  • RSA Predator (AMP/DAC)

Hey, you said that the cans sound good trough your macbook > e17 but not trough your iPod. That means that getting a new amp wouldn't fix the problem. I you get a new amp it will still amplify the low quality ipod signal.

Getting a new source should be the better option.

I had the k550 and they don't really benefit from a better amp. Source is much more important.

Thxs for your opinion..but it's really hard to compare when there is no digital out on the iPod. Unless I go Fostex e.g.  but that's is out of my budget. Also the K550 is reasonable as well with the iPod-E17 combo. When I ad the Shure S215 though it's getting worse. But true a nice DAP to replace would be great as well. I think that's why people advise to upgrade the SE215. K550 is still home use only ;)

Why do people say that the K550 don't need better amping? That good or forgiving?
