Thanks for posting. I've been wanting to try a FA-003 clone and a free pair of pretty decent IEMs is about as good as that deal is going to get.

Could you elaborate? How do they stack up with A900x or something similar?

I've never heard the a900x, but from what I read on here, people seem to really like them, esp that refurbished ones can sometime go for 100 to 110. The FA003 and all its clones are definitely very comfortable and solidly built, but the mids seem to be wonky as if someone threw a blanket over a pair of speakers, making vocals sound dull. They don't sound terrible and are actually very relaxing, but would be lacking if you like listening to rock, metal, or anything high energy. I personally find that m50s and shure 840s have better overall sound quality, although not as comfortable.

question. have we found that products cost less in the country of origin? like do AKGs cost way less in Austria, for example?

Most companies have stringent MSRP pricing on their current-production models, so the answer is usually NO.

I would agree with most, but not necessarily all. Generally, it only works out math wise to do it on higher priced items.

Two good examples are Fostex and Audio Technica. The Fostex A8 can be purchased and imported from Japan for under $1000. The best price you'll get within the US distributors is around $1500, bur regular prices are $2000. The Fostex TH-600 can be imported for about $780, and most prices in the US are at best $1000.

Audio Technica isnt as severe. Its usually a 10-15% discount to do the Japan route.

Grados are usually lower priced in the U.S. than in other countries.

Grados are made in Brooklyn. No import taxes for them.

Stax cost much less to buy and import from a third-party reseller in Japan than buying them new anywhere else. You might have to tweak the amps to adjust for the differing polarity and voltage in Japan, though.
