alternative to HD 598 with better build quality?

Thread Starter

So I am looking to upgrade my headsets (currently PC 360). And I've been reading around and my clear choice is the HD 598. I love the sound stage and how my music sounds on the PC 360's and the HD 598 wouldn't be a huge departure from them (hopefully a bit better though)

However I am very worried about their build quality. What I have read is that they tend to crack, even my friend who owns one (one of the most careful i know) has a crack in his head phones.

I don't have the best luck with headsets, mine tend to break every year or two. I was just wondering if there are any headphones that are just as good in the sound department as the HD 598 but with a better build quality? Hopefully with detachable cable as well.

Thanks in advance!

Had mine for years now, no crack. I'm fairly gentle with them but they've taken a few moments of rough handling and are no worse for the wear. They're still my favorite headphones at their price point.

the issue was resolved a long time ago as the crack only occured on the first batch, and yes they do have detachable cables, its a twist and lock system, (twist left to unlock, and right to lock)
did you friend buy them a long time ago? hey may have had the early batch.
i have heard of a Sony MDR-SA1000 being a rival to the HD598, maybe you could give that a look and some research

You can only find them used since they aren't made any more, but the sennheiser 580 is actually better than the 598s and the build quality is much better.

Or you can try and find used sennheiser HD600s for cheap.

You can look into the HD558, which are cheaper with a similar sound. There's also a mod you can make to increase the airyness on them.

I think that in general, open headphones feel less sturdy than closed headphones.

Mostly it's because they don't have the solid baffles on the earcups providing structural integrity.

But, with that said, I think the Beyer DT880's have terrific build quality (partially because of

the 'semi-open' design).  They're priced similarly to the 598's - many think they sound better as well.

Twice as expensive, most of the time.

Currently on Amazon the HD598 is $222 and the Beyer Pro DT880 is $229 for an example. Obviously cost varies by country and vendor.

not quite so, yet indeed pricier.

Point taken.
