Quick Inquiry re: a buyer wanting to return a pair of headphones I sold him yesterday (in person)

This is a "what should I do" type inquiry:

 

I sold a local buyer (we met locally yesterday afternoon) my HD650s.  We met, he inspected them, chose not to listen to them, and was fine with the deal.  

 

Tonight, I received this PM:

 

"Hello, sorry I need to return this. There is something wrong with the build. I talk a lot of the time when I'm using these and there is this creaking I hear on the left earphone whenever I do it."

 

So basically there is creaking on the left earphone when he talks while wearing them. 

 

I never experienced this problem (or never noticed it if they did creak when talking as I'm usually sitting down on the couch when listening) but came across these links when doing a HF search on the issue:

I offered to give him $5-10 to purchase of bottle of oil and try to fix the problem.  He insists on a return.  I realize returning the cans is the simplest solution so not sure if I've answered my own question.

User Error. They're made of mostly plastic; they all creak like that when you move them around. Though, they may loosen up over time. If a person is going to be so picky over a pair of used HD650, which are actually far better built than most consumer products these days, then how the hell do they navigate around...life?

 

Sounds like a typical case of buyer's remorse. You're a private seller, not a retailer that has to build customer loyalty to earn that margin and a living. Unfortunately you sound like quite a reasonable fellow, which places you at the significant disadvantage in any further interaction :(

 

I feel that you are under no obligation to further entertain this buyer's neuroses.

Okay... just a thought.

 

 

Does the buyer wear glasses? I hear a creaking all the time on my HD650, and it's actually the sound of the earpads + glasses frame believe it or not. If so, maybe the buyer can fiddle with 'em? Try stretching them a bit (carefully)? Or tell him/her to sell them to someone else.
