HD598 VS HD650 soundstage

Hey guys... i am saving up for my next upgrade. i've always wanted to try out the HD650. i heard it produces the most incredible mid of all headphones that's below $800. but since i also play a lot of video games, and i really love soundstage for both gaming and music. i am wondering how the HD650 compares to my current go to headphone HD598.

please chime in, preferably someone who has owned both. and yes, i have enough amping power to drive them.

i read that the HD650 has a slightly smaller but more accurate soundstage (do take a grain of salt)
the HD650 definitely sounds more refined overall, warmer and richer, just probably not have as wide of a soundstage as the HD598 (only if properly amped)

folks here would suggest the HE400 as well though, but i can't say anything since i haven't even seen them in person before. but often they recommend the HE400 over the HD650, just stating.

thanks, i'd be interested to know how much, or little smaller the soundstage is compare to the 598.

Heya,

Mids of the HD598 and HD650 are probably comparable I would say. Sound stage too. The difference is the HD598 is bright and has less mid-bass. The HD650 is darker and has more mid-bass (but not a ton more). Simply different flavor.

As for the $800 and under, you can do better than both frankly. HE400 for example trumps it to me. But that's because I prefer ortho mids at this price point.

Very best,

Thanks MalVeauX, it's exactly what i was looking for.

looks like i'll give HD650 a try, worst case scenario, i'll find a reputable place and return it if i dont like it and use it for something else like a tube amp.

That HD598 looks sexy as hell tho, that was probably the reason you were comparing these two headphones?

no i already have the 598. i am just itching to upgrade. it'll either be a tube amp or another headphone. i've always heard great things about 650, so i thought maybe it's the right time. i do admit that i love the look of 598 a lot. i am just a little wary since people in the past have stated 650's soundstage isn't as big as 598. i guess i'll just have to try and find out.

I've always found the HD-598 to have a much larger soundstage than the HD-650. It's not even a close one. I do however find the soundstage of the HD-650 more accurate and with better imaging etc.

I always preferred the 598 to the last two HD-650's i've had, but this new one is much better. No large mid-bass hump and doesn't seem dark at all. It's a bit more laid back than I originally thought, but I still love it.

The mids of the 598 are definitely more forward a little more engaging. Both are good. The 650 is definitely warmer though.

The 598 though doesn't seem to improve much with better amps. I haven't tried a tube amp though.

maybe because it's my hyper sensitive hearing. but i found the 598 improve quite well after amping. the bass is punchier, and mid and highs are more pronounced as well.

HD 600 would be the better pick

Yes, you're right that it improves, but what I meant to say is that when switching to better amps, the HD-650 seems to benefit more from upgrades than the HD-600 and 598. Not sure why..

I noticed this when I had my Asgard, Headroom Micro and E9 along with the 598, 600 and 650. The 598 sounded mostly the same on all of them..

Which makes 650 more of a fun investment for the long run sounds like. :)

For soundstage? Certainly not.

HD598 is the better overall can compared to 600/650, IMO. I have not heard the HE-400, but if it's imaging and soundstage you are after, orthodynamics are at a disadvantage right off the bat.
