Matrix X-Sabre DAC review and impression thread - Page 64

I'm just listening to a 16/44 PCM (Julia Fischer - Sarasate) up-sampled to 2xDSD on JRiver Media Centre 19 on a MacBook Pro and no problem at all - sounds fantastic as does the original lower res PCM file. The PCM file sounds a bit rougher and "more real" and I must say I prefer that to the up-sampled "smoothed out" DSD version. But bear with me - I received my X-Sabre only today and just started playing around with it...

Hi there, I got the X-Sabre off one of the forum members who advertised here but you can order it directly from Matrix here: http://store.matrix-digi.com

I got it off a forum member who advertised here but you can order it directly from Matrix-digi in China - if you pay via payPal then you should be safe but be mindful that there might be additional charges like custom fees and VAT...

Here is the USA site.

Arthur is a great guy to deal with.  Also every once in awhile they have a special.

I've had the Matrix X-Sabre for about a week now. I'd say that this is the best value for money DAC that I own. Remember, the laws of diminishing returns with virtually anything applies, and I still rate this slightly above the Asus Essence STX in terms of bang for buck (if you can afford one).

I have a NAD M51, Asus Essence STX, Asus Essence One, Cambridge Audio DACmagic Plus.

The X-sabre has rendered all but the M51 obsolete, and I can see the M51 leaving before the X-sabre, but that will only happen for a big upgrade (Dual Mono DAC).

I will post impressions of the X-sabre, but I cannot seem to find the right mood for it yet, but rest assured, this DAC sounds beautiful.

I'll second that with Arthur. He is definitely the go to guy for this piece. At no additional cost he sends Fed Ex Express. I had it from China in 4 days.

I might be getting this bad boy soon... Pairing it with a SA31SE amp and a HE-560 planarmagnetic headphone :]

So I picked up this DAC from a fellow Head-Fi'er and got it hooked up today.  The sound is similar to the Gungnir but it edges out with a bit of clarity to the presentation.  The Gungnir always felt very forward and in your face, this seems a bit more laid back and softer.  It can still rock out with some metal though no issue.

What was really surprising to me is how small this thing is compared to the Gungnir but just how dense and heavy it is.  It is honestly built like a brick schiit house.

Well, being made from a solid slab of aluminum will do that.

So it would make a solid weapon of convenience is what you're saying...
