Just got some info from Arthur at Matrix USA. Apparently there was a potential issue with driver compatibility when using the latest versions of JRiver or Foobar. Matrix did a lot of testing and at one point thought they needed to redo their driver. It had to do with DSD playback only, while PCM remained fine.

Turns out the errors were related to individual hardware (the PC, not the X-Sabre) being used, and the driver is fine. Girls Generation apparently has some insight into this. But my point here is this - if you experience DSD playback issues, contact Matrix and they will work hard to rectify it, whether it is your system or the drivers. They have good support and want to make their customers happy, period.

Care to tell us the entire saga? I prefer 3D rendered visual enhancements if you have time....

Arthur was very intent on helping the person out who had trouble with DSD playback. I tried testing all variables possible. I had no issues but with the same method, the other had. Not sure what happened after that but I guess it was that person's PC which had trouble with DSD output. :|

Still burn'n in, and really starting to enjoy this DAC.  No regrets at all at this point, more to come! ... and I'm very particular about my sound.  I didn't expect that I would accept the Op-Amp signature because I am that critical about my discrete (sonic) signature, however, my feet are tapping to the music, and I am now turning down the volume as opposed to increasing it to compensate for wasn't there.

Nice! Don't worry about opamps versus discrete - there's nothing that dictates "opamps always sound like X, discrete always sounds like Y". I think the term "discrete" makes people feel all warm and fuzzy inside, but there's no guarantee a discrete design has to be any good. They can be done poorly, just like an opamp based design can be done poorly.

Finally my paycheck arrived - X-Sabre is ordered and I can't wait for it. It was real pain to have so pricey components stacked on shelf without any chance to listen to them :)

I have a question regarding X-Sabre (not related to its sound quality tho) - how long does it take to Matrix to ship one? I ordered mine from http://www.audiophonics.fr/matrix-xsabre-dac-usb-32bit384khz-dsd-dxd-dac-audio-p-7415.html , it seems to be much more convenient solution than having it shipped from China (avoiding dealing with customs).

I am also wondering what OS to use with it (to achieve bitperfect streaming) - some linux dist. or Win7/Win8? Are there any problems with one or another when it comes to X-Sabre? I am thinking of Win7+ foobar2k + ASIO, it should be fairly easy to setup (or at least easier than setting up gmusicbrowser on Ubuntu). Going to buy some of Intel NUC systems as dedicated source and don't know if I should "waste" some money on Win7 or just go with some unix system.

There was a bug in one of the recent drivers for DSD playback on Win8, but that may have been fixed by now. I use Win 7 with JRiver MC17 set to WASAPI Event.

My X-Sabre has arrived, I can finally start building my whole system. I am still yet to buy HTPC, but other than that - I am ready to roll! Nice touch with 32GB flash drive from them as well :)

By the way - is X-Sabre supported on Ubuntu? I just read the manual (well, brochure) and only Windows and MacOS were mentioned there. I don't really want to spend money on Windows unless I really have to.

Nice!

Not sure about Ubuntu. It works with Linux so there's a good chance Ubuntu will be the same, but no guarantee until you try it.

Ye, I think there is no better way other than trying myself. I think I will start off with OpenELEC - I have read some discussion for allowing bitperfect streaming on it, will see (not sure about DSD playback tho). If it fails I will move to Ubuntu, and even if that fails, Win7 is my last resort (it would be first if it was free :) ).

Congrats, really enjoying mine!
