I just got the ODAC and O2 and feel it's a little better than my STX. There's discussion about which is better between the Magni/Modi and the O2/ODAC: http://www.head-fi.org/t/642401/comparison-and-review-magni-modi-vs-o2-odac

I realise your question is about clarity/sq

but for the desktop you are going to use i would consider external AMP/DAC

at least if it goes south and the music components are fine you can go free range on a laptop or desktop :)

I was wondering why you wanted to revive that old computer when you have a macbook pro. Not going to get better SQ.

This, although ncmpcpp would be my personal favourite. Or cmus+cmus-remote. Plug them into a $30 Celeron laptop, put your music collection on an NAS, boom, awesome-as-heck setup. Who needs a stinking Squeezebox? biggrin.gif
