Hi guys i was thinking of buying a Ipod Classic but i want to know which one has the best sound chip, i would like your opinion on which one is best

This should have been posted in the portable source forum.  Some will say that the 5.5 generation is the best, others will say that the DACs these days are of such high quality, you really couldn't tell them apart.

So it's really simple, many might try and argue about which is the true best one, but this is how I see it.

Best analytical-sounding iPod: iPod Classic 7th Generation (Cirrus Logic DAC inside)

Best warm-sounding iPod: iPod Video 5th or 5(1/2)th Generation (Wolfson DAC inside)

Of course, with use of an external amp and the line out, you can change the sound characteristics a bit. I'd say the two iPod's I mentioned are basically on par with each other just better in that specific way I listed. Also, the newer iPod may get you better battery life. If you plan to use something like the CLAS, then it really makes no difference which one you get.

My favorite is the Monochrome 3G with Firewire and 15gb hard drive. Sounds amazing, but too much hassle to use these days. I think it only charges with Firewire but you can sync it with a USB cable. I wish there was a mod to upgrade it's hard drive..

Next favorite is my Ipod Touch 2G. It's really flat, but really not warm at all.

I bought an Ipod Video 5.5 from my mom and I think it sounds awful. It has rolled off bass and some upper mid peak. It might be nice with the right headphone.
