Do you or other people notice a difference in isolation? I know the DT880's are described as semi open, but I'm not sure if that makes any difference compared to headphones described as open. I'm particularly interested in whether or not it's quieter to other people around you.

I have seen them referred to as  such, but IMHO they are about as open as can be... pretty much everything escapes and gets in.

Very strange wierdness here.........................my DT880 sound very different than my Q701.

Granted they are the 600 Ohm version of the DT880.

But no one could ever mistake my DT880 for a pair of Q701 or vice versa.

Relatively speaking my DT880 sound darker than my Q701. No one would ever say my DT880s sound cold or analytical.

Isolation is similar between the two as is sound leakage. My wife remarks that both are too loud when I wear them to sleep. I can hear my own voice pretty well with either of them which is great because I like to sing.

 

I think the difference in open-ness mostly comes down to the 880's use of felt. The 880 uses an open grill but there is a little donut of felt glued to it. Felt is not a terribly good sound insulator but it does effect the movement of air. It effects the resonances and airflow more than the sound itself (talking about outside sounds going in, or visa versa)
