My ears sick out a little so that sucks but comfort is slowly improving.

Sure they're uncomfortable, but man they sound good! R&b is just a blessing with these things.

The ATH-WS99 has SPL of 103 db and a impedance of 37 ohms, so yeah you won't get any significant improvement in sound quality from amping because these phones were sensitive enough to be driven by portable players straight from the HP jack, (the headphones were designed to be used in that purpose anyways)  unless your source is bad to begin with like immensely low output power or uneven FQ response though that's unlikely since a lot of good quality players can be bought nowadays.

not wrong, if you are using daps with relatively high power. But if you are using it straight out of ipod or iphone or this sort daps, you can hardly get the sound ws99 is capable of producing. If you followed closely to the earlier posts in this thread, you'll see many people saying that these benefit greatly from an amp. True enough, I personally feel its nearly a day and night difference. Some say its due to driver size but not sure about that. But once you hear it you'll understand:)

Guys,

I'm looking for an excellent set of circumaureal portable phones to replace the current IEM. I like the sound of the MH1C, but hate the cable and its painfully uncomfortable to wear. Comfort is now a top priority for me.

Tried looking for alternatives and was seriously considering the Mad Dogs with Alpha Pads - but needs a decent portable amp to make it sound good.

Then looked at the Sony MDR-1R as it has the sound signature that I would like. Stumbled into Dsnuts thread on the ATH-ES700 and thought this might be the best one for me. Going through the ATH-ES700 thread there was a mention of the ATH-WS99 and that got me into another rabbit hole.

I've now opened an account with Amazon.jp and about to complete the Tenso registration form for identity check. I see a ATH-WS99 in the not too distant future...

A question for current owners. Cable microphonics - is it there? I detest it on the MH1C while walking about. This is on top of the much hated cable and acceptable fit into the ear.

Steve

No microphonics on these.

If I rub on the upper part of the cord (without the extender, there is some, but very little.

Like I said in my post, insufficient power and/or high output impedance can really affect the sound. if your ipod doesn't seem to make your headphone sound as it should then it could be either or both the problems that I stated that is causing the problem. I think for most ipods specially the older ones have these issues. for dynamic ones with a bit less SPL, it usually a power shortage, for BAs however, it's the high output impedance. but, for instance, in a sansa clip+ or a cowon player, this a non-issue at all since both have relatively healthy output power and  low output impedance. in fact, the clip+ even has more power output than an itouch with virtually no distortion, even at max volume, so yeah, it all depends on the source weather you would need amping or not.

I just found that the dt250 pads fits the m50 just well so it must be ok with the ws99

The dt250 pads don't fit on mine. Theyre too oval shaped.

frown.gifthanks, unfortunately  most of AT 53'mm driver's full size headphones are oval shaped

You men circle shaped. The hm5 pads work on them, and the k267 pads.

Do those velours reduce the bass in any noticeable way?

Without the backing plate they come with you do lose some bass compared to the stock pads.   With the backing plate I don't think so. It may of even been more bass. With the backing plates they were vibrating the headphones crazily. I only had the backing plates on for a very short time since it was quite apparent I preferred the sound without them.  I admit I primarily adjust the volume to get the bass level I like.  This probably means the mids and highs are louder to what they would of been compared to if I had the stock pads on.  I like that balance better and that may just be a personal preference.
