The NEW WS99/WS77 PG 57.. - Page 62

Just got the WS99 and they sound great. They make my IEMs sound kind of bad in comparison though... Are there any IEMs that sound similar to the WS99? (already own the Vsonic GR02 BE and Sony XBA-3)

Also, has anybody tried pairing these with an audioquest dragonfly?

You nailed it! I've had the xba3's, and I have the gr07be's, but the only iem that satisfies me as much as the ws99's do are the cks1000's.

I would agree with that.  The 500's don't sound as aggressive at the top but manages to add more clarity.  The bass of the 500's sound fuller and has more weight but doesn't sound as fast as the 400.

After doing some listening to both the WS99 and HE400, I'm not sure that someone who likes the HE400 would be satisfied with the WS99…except me. tongue_smile.gif  For starters, the bass is thicker on the WS99 and although it's not a slow bass, sounds rather slow compared and mid-bass heavy.  As for the rest of the spectrum, the HE400's space around the instruments are just down right superior.  It's like listening to music live compared to sitting in your room.

Then you gotta look into driving the HE400.  The WS99's are one of the easiest headphones to drive and you will need a decent amp to drive the HE400.  I've listened to many of the popular portable headphones here at Head-Fi and the WS99 rank near the top, if not at the top.  I absolutely love this headphone and this is coming from a guy that loves Hifiman stuff (many seem to be bass anemic but I find them almost perfect on some).

So, if you're not super critical about your gear and enjoy music in all different flavors (as long as it's tuned well), then you will love the HE400 and the WS99.  smile.gif

I gotta say, that's high praise indeed!

The WS99 has less treble, and the midrange is not as articulated or sweet as the ES10, but the bass is very much better.

I'm quite confused about your remarks on the midrange though at least the bass is better so I guess that'd make some assurance for me. The ES10 hasn't really lowered in price for the past couple years so I think the WS99 is a more logical choice, sound to value wise. many thanks to your impressions. :D

Thanks Dannybai, I really appreciate that you took the time to do a comparison and relay your thoughts. You haven't dissuaded me from getting the WS99. It seems like they'll make a great closed/portable complement to the HE-400, and will make me pretty freakin' happy in their own right.

Editted to add: The WS99 are back in stock at Amazon US, under $200. Tempting!

Crazy how they were $250 while they were out of stock and now that they're in stock, the cost $200 confused_face.gif

I mentioned a little while back that I was going to be putting my 99's up for sale. Well the time is now, they are listed on the classifieds along with a few others. Trying to save up to fund for a better amp so these and some others need to go to help pay for it.

Thanks,

I think I paid around $200 from Amazon Japan and using Tenso.  This is a good deal.

Aw shucks, another US-only. If anyone is selling them and willing to ship to Canada, I'm in!

You could PM him and see. I've dealt with these "US-only" characters before, and they sometimes can be broken!

I've never shipped international before but may be willing to entertain offers.

Maybe...
