The NEW WS99/WS77 PG 57.. - Page 61

Just the overall sound. But mainly the mixture of vocals and bass.

Someone may have asked this question already so forgive me for that. Well, this ATH-WS99 comes with a 53mm driver right, same driver size as the more expensive ATH-ES10. My question is, are they comparable, sound-wise? If so, which one is better overall?

You can pm Maxx134. He has them.

Alrighty guys, I finally got the ws99s!!!!!!!

A little bit more bass than I expected (not a bad thing), but the sound is well balanced. It's a little early for impressions though. I've only had em for like 30 minutes tongue.gif. Man this bass is just crazy tight!

I still prefer the ma900s for comfort, though these aren't uncomfortable. The only thing I feel needs eq'ing are the upper mids/highs (ws99). The ma900s still win in rock, but these aren't far behind. They need burn in though so ill just keep on playin em'!

As much as I love my AD900x, ever since I've gotten my WS99, they're all I've been listening to. I've been on a big trance kick lately, so it's no surprise that they've been planted to my head. Despite the healthy bass they have, I still really aggressively EQ the subbass into them; E12v1 bass boost on, RPGwizard's dolby forward setup, and an imitation of the iCan's bass boost 3, which starts with a +10db at the lowest frequency and tapering off from there until +0 at around 300ish Hz. SO GOOD.

The AD900x is still king of everything else, like rock, orchestral (though, the blurry imaging kinda blows... but at least I still have my AD700), and jazz.

I can't increase the bass any more on these things. If I wanted any more sub bass than I would just lower the mid-bass.

I'm just about ready to cry listening to these things.
I mean...every time I get a new can, I have to get used to em, and slowly let them grow on me, but these things!

I know because even though I've had the 99's for a few months, every time I put them on it's just a lot of this going on... biggrin.gifL3000.gifbiggrin.gif

They are the real deal!

Has anyone heard these and the Hifiman HE-400? Is the WS99 comparable in bass quality and quantity? How does detail compare, considering planar vs. dynamic and their pricepoints? I just demoed the HE-400 for a week but other recent hits to my budget have had me looking very seriously at the WS99 to "hold me over" until the HE-400 are back in my budget, and to cover my mobile/closed phone slot, replacing my K81djs. Any feedback would be appreciated, thanks!

Based on what Maxx134 has heard, and what I heard when I briefly auditioned them, it very much comes down to your preference.

The WS99 has less treble, and the midrange is not as articulated or sweet as the ES10, but the bass is very much better.

I haven't listened to the HE400's in a few weeks or so.  I'll listen to both tonight and report back.  But from memory, I think the WS99 has the bigger bass, especially reaching in the lower notes.  The HE400 is more aggessive sounding in the treble and generally a faster headphone.  I'll  come back with better impressions tonight.

From what I understand from following the HE-400 and 500, the 400 is more top heavy while the 500 is more bottom heavy, no?
