That Dennon sound is in another direction and you wont have the Audio Technica finesse of keeping the bass out of and overshadowing the mids, and the ease of portable use as Audio Technica does not need amping.

The Denon D600 is an amazing basshead can. It's VERY comfy, right up there with the Sony 1R as the two most comfortable headphones I've ever tried. Compared to WS99, the D600 has more detailed mids and looser bass, but there's just more bass quantity so it's not all that surprising.

Oh and portability wise, D600 is bigger and sticks out a lot more from your ears, but it folds up and comes with two detachable cables, one with 3-button smartphone controls. WS99 looks a lot sleeker on the head, but doesn't fold (the cups do swivel flat though) and the cable is not detachable from the earpieces. There is a one-button smartphone extension cable though.

Could you give us comparison between WS55X, WS33X and WS99? Thanks

Denons have mid? biggrin.gif

Kidding.

But yeah, the Denon DX000 series has a completely different presentation compared to most Audio Technica headphones. Midrange is pushed faaaarrr back to simulate a more expansive soundstage. I don't think bass bleeds into mid (especially true for D5000 and D7000), but it's pretty hard to hear "any" mid already when there's a lot of treble and bass playing.

I wonder if any brave soul will lug along a WS99 to the SF Bay Area meet next week. If I spot one, you bet I'll do a comparison to my W1000X and wooden ES10. I'm kinda curious about the WS99 since my little brother seems like he's gonna need a new headphone soon.

That's why I don't like Denon's presentation all that much. :p The only genres it works for me would be classical/orchestra as that genre benefits quite a lot by that kind of signature by the pushed back / not so much in-your-face mids but overall it would leave me bored and unengaged with the music.

Wow!  The WS99 are fun headphones!  I fell into dsnuts' trap.  biggrin.gif

They are great as a portable headphone.  Although amping them widens the sound stage and tightens up the bass, IMO it's not needed.  Coming from DT880s and Mad Dogs 3.2 with Alpha Pads these beat on your head like a gorilla banging a trash can.  However, mids are suprisingly clear and the treble is smooth and non fatiguing.

I had issues with my ears hitting the drivers and my ears hitting just fitting inside the cups, so I did the rope mod and comfort is now quite good. An excellent buy.  Thanks dsnuts!

That is why i am really doubting to buy the Denon D600 i am listening to the ws55 lately and like it even more then the Sony 1R that i send back what a crap phone midrange too much presence bass is weird and highs are not that good so i want the ws99 more then the D600 after these last comments i guess...

Summary

WS33x : Slightly thinner and laid back in the mids and more treble than WS99 or WS55x, resulting in clean and relaxed mids.Bass-heavy. Yet, bass never ever intrudes the mids and it really sounds like there's a separate drivers for each freuency. Very spacious and airy sound. Not very transparent in its timbre though(but its cheap^^). It has wider stage than all solid bass headphones and I'm thinking its due to on-ear design which gives distance between drivers and the ears. Surprisingly, upfront detail presentation, noticed some details I didn't hear on AD900x, probably due to AD900x's poor ability to handle complx music. Great for ALL genres imo.

WS55x : Forward and incredibly natural and rich mids less treble than WS33x. Bigger sound and better coherence. Overall tone is definitely darker hence there's more authority and musicality. Found that it handles acoustic music very very well and modern music very well. WS33x has slight advantage on modern music for its airier(by a tiny margin) stage. Of course it doesn't have the authority and musicality:)

I will compare them to WS99 next time when I go to a store and audition them. Yeap, I sold it to fund AD900x and ws55x. Just to give the most accurate comparison:)

Anyways, I remember I didn't love ws99 as much as I love ws33x and ws55x. They just have better sense of space which I entirely love and that sound signature is something special. Audio technica is dead serious about sound and you'll hear it on the ws33x and ws55x. They are two very different cans so go with your preference. But either ways, you can't go wrong:)

Heh well time to save up for a ws55x.... even though I just sold the ws55 haha. Cheapest one I can find on ebay is like $112 shipped. And I have this random jvc s400 (which isn't bad for its price, but in the end it doesn't compete with the other stuff I have...) too...  I don't even know what to do with the s400... I mean its like $25 and I'm not selling it since that would just be a waste of time. I do like the red ws55x... it seems that it would complement my mdr 1rs both in color and sound lol. Audio Technica needs to start doing single entry cables though...

Its a bit odd that when I started out I only had Audio technica stuff... now I have 0 audio technica headphones lol. Need another "fun" headphone....  the Q701 and MDR 1R don't really fit the bill in that regard :P.

Oh yeah does anyone know if that 53mm driver is the same one as say the ws99?
