Best IPod in terms of sound quality?

I currently own an iPhone 4S as my portable source. Are there any iPods that are much better in terms of noticeable quality? I'm going to be using the mad dogs as my headphones along with a portable amp like the Fio E7. Cheers

The 4S is right up there with the best of the iPod lineup, I think. So a Touch or Classic would likely be close to your phone.

Don't be surprised if some of the ever-present Apple haters post that you can do better though....lol.

The ipod 5th/5.5 with the wolfsen audio chip is definitely the best. Plus you're using the E7 so that doesn't even matter since its a DAC.

The iPhone can only use the amp section of the E7. You need one of the Apple licensed DACs such as the CLAS or Fostex HP-P1 to use an external DAC with an iPhone.

I personally swear by my Video but there's not a lot of difference between it and the 4S.
