Mr speaker mad dog vs shure 940

Have sold my beyerdynamic 770 pros to put towards an upgrade. Was really set on the mr speaker mad dogs but have came across the shure 940. My music taste is all over the place rock, some rap and indie music I don't have a preference. Now before I buy these in 2 weeks I want to be sure if I have the right headhones as this is my final pair for a while. Right now I have the D2000 and shure 440 left I love the denons and like the shure but I find the shure harsh sounding. My fab trait in a headphone is soundstage, detail, nice sounding! comfort and also durability. I really loved my beyers so won't a headphone I'm going to be impressed with.

I find it weird that you found the SRH440s harsh BUT NOT THE D2000s!!!! So right from the bat I'm going to tell you that we hear differently.

Anyway, parting from that, the SRH940s I found comfortable (not as much as the Beyers DT770 Pro) but you will get a slap to your face (or ears) because the differences are palpable and easily identified. Soundstage is Ok, wider than the Beyers, bass is not prominent like the Beyers, but instead you get awesome mids and upper mids (best headphones for female vocalists I have tried) and good highs. Mad Dogs are one of my current favorites. It's takes a bit of getting used to (and as I've and others have mentioned on the Mad Dogs thread you might even feel underwhelmed!!) but after you let your brain get used to the sound, ufff... pretty good warm-ish headphones. Mids are excellent, bass is definitely reproduced, including sub-bass and they are super comfortable. Soundstage is a bit similar to the 940s to what I remember form the Shures.

So my pick would be the Mad Dogs because it can do what the Shure does and provides more bass presence (love it with most if not all genres...). But, YMMV...

Good luck.

SHR940 is not durable. It also has a big mid-bass hole, so probably won't be very fun with rap and other music with any bass lines.

The Mad Dog would be more in line with what you're looking for. A lot like that D2000.

Very best,

Cheers both looks like mad dog it is. And yeah I find the 440 harsh for some reason but find the D2000 laid back and relaxing. Can the velour pads from the beyer or 940 fit the mad dog? I prefer velour as the pads don't make me sweat after a while.

Heya,

I think they might. The SRH940 pads fit on the SRH840, and the SRH840 pads are used on old Mad Dogs. Maybe it will work? I've not tried it.

Very best,

Very best,

Bear in mind though, as MrSpeakers has mentioned a few times, using any other kind of pads (be it velour, or STAX pads), can and WILL change sound signature...

The 940's are extremely bright with little to no bass response.  Horrible cans in my opinion.
