need to upgrade sound from my pc

I am currently just using my crappy onboard headphone output....  wanting to upgrade....  should I get something like the titanium hd....  or go with something like the schiit magni/modi combo or something similer...  would like to keep it under or right around 200 bucks

That depends: if you do a lot of gaming or movie watching, you may be interested in 5.1 sound. Soundcards have surround sound processors built in, external DACs don't. If you just want to listen to music with better quality, then an external DAC/amp could be a better option.

 

What headphones are you planning to use it with?

I listen to music mostly, but I do game some...  music is much more important though...

 

I mainly use my sr850 right now, but am also looking to upgrade....  trying to decide between T50rp, sa1000, or m-audio q40....  I might stretch my budget a little

In that case looks like an external DAC/amp will work better for you. The schiit modi/magni should work well with these headphones.

+1 to focusing on a solid all-around headphone with a good DAC/AMP to power it.

On further note, as a fellow gamer, you don’t need ‘gaming headphones’ to have good headphones for gaming. It’s beyond the scope of your budget, but my HE-500’s give me pin-point accuracy in terms of sound stage. Between that and a gamer mouse I’m regularly accused of hacking for doing a near 180° turn to pop some kid in the head.

I had a similar experience when I bought my UE700’s and my Denon AH-D2000’s. With each audio upgrade I got a better soundstage with superior imaging and each time I noticed improved performance.

The Schiit Magni & Modi combo ($200) should bring out the best in any headphones, but is 2-chaanel stereo audio only and comes with zero surround sound features for gaming and movies.

 

The Creative labs Sound Blaster Z & Zx sound cards seem to be a good value for gaming, movies and music.

Come with a headphone amplifier and the CS4398 DAC chip.

Sometimes the Zx goes on sale for $120

I have also seen some other dac/amps like the Aune T1, Nuforce icon, and topping TP-32...  how would those compare with the magni/modi??
