Deciding between Ultrasone Pro 550 and DJ1 Pro, and which sound card or DAC to improve quality?

Hi guys,

Long time forum frequenter although I have never registered. Nice to meet you all :)

Need a headphone for about 60% games (FPS, RPG's, and MMO's), 30% music, and 10% movies. I was originally looking at the AD700's, but I would like something with a a pit punchier bass because I listen to electronic music, and I want to be more immersed in games and movies. Which led me to the Ultrasones. They appear to be excellent well rounders, and they look pretty nice! Not sure about comfort though.

So this leads me to my questions... can anyone with these headphones please comment on how they sound during games/how they feel? Also I read that these two models are pretty similar just different appearances, but someone did say on here that the DJ1 Pro has a wider soundstage. Which would you recommend more for a mix of games/movies/music and for comfort?

Finally, would I need any extra equipment to really make these headphones shine? I was thinking about getting a PCI-E sound card (maybe Xonar DGX or DS) but as I said I switch between my desktop and laptop a lot, so maybe a USB soundcard like the Xonar U3 and/or a external DAC? Which would be the best route for these headphones? I'm an audio newbie (coming from an X12 headset) so I really don't know what the real world difference is between a sound card and external DAC, and which I would be better off with, so any help would be appreciated!

Thanks a ton guys! :)

Heya,

The DJ1 is the HFI580, bassy, warm, a little metallic, good sound stage, good build.

The PRO550 and DJ PRO are essentially the same headphone. A little better sound stage. But not as robust in the bass area.

I would actually say consider the Beyer DT770 PRO or the AudioTechnica A900X if you want a closed, bassy headphone with a good sound stage.

If you game a ton, the DG or DGX would be a nice start but won't work with your laptop. If you don't have any concern for dolby headphone or emulated surround stuff that sound card software and chipsets can use, you can get an external dac/amp option to keep it mobile and usable between all your devices.

The U3 would be a decent starting point if you want to retain sound card options in a small mobile form. The above headphones do not need strong external amplifiers. So you'd be good to go right out of the box.

Very best,

Would you recommend the Beyer DT 770 PRO over the Ultrasone 550 Pro? When I say gaming, I do play some fps's and listen to electronic, so I need some bass, but I'm by no means a basshead where bass has to dominate. I'm just looking for a moderate amount of it. The main things I'm looking for are comfort, and all around great sound quality (so in games like Skyrim, GW2, ect. I can hear everything clearly and be immersed completely). Budget is $200 max for the headphones, with $50 max in soundcard (internal or external) or an external DAC. Not sure which one would be better in this case but since I game on both my laptop and desktop maybe an external DAC or soundcard would benefit me more. Anything in this range has to be better than my X12's uncomfortable grip and decent sound quality.

Okay, after doing more research, I added two more. I can't decide between the Ultrasone 550/750 Pro or Beyerdynamic DT 770/800 Pro.. Which is better for my needs? Thanks!
