I wish I was a true audiophile like some of you guys so I could tell you what exactly is wrong.

 

I've had these puppies on for a half-hour now.  They fit great.  No sibilance issues, except for one track which is widely known to have been poorly mastered. The low-end is great, albeit slightly strong.  However, being an se530/535 user for the past 6 years, it'll take some getting used to hearing a defined low-end.

 

The mid-range though, it's like someone is covering it with their hands.  Something is holding it back.  Not sure what to do.  Any ideas?

I'm guessing you like the mid forward Shure sound, I'm thinking the JH16 has a v-shape sound sig which may not be to your taste.

I thought with the new freqphase it was supposed to make the 16's flatter than virtually every other IEM out there.

 

I'm not sure that it is the sound sig.  The Midrange sounds muddled.

The "flat" graph is not an FR graph, it's a phase graph (showing that sound from all drivers essentially arrive at the ear at the same time.)  The FR graph would not be flat, they are deliberately bass-heavy.

The mids are very neutral IMHO my scorpion and silver poison helped sweeten them up a little bit.

I've owned the E5/530/535 for 9 years (or so). The JH16 freq-phase is on my shortlist (wishlist) so I can't help you. However, I'd say give them more time to (you know “burn in”) open up.

 

What is your source? Perhaps it can't adequately drive the high number of BAs without an amp.

don't laugh.  i'm using an rMBP and iphone 5.  Can't afford an amp yet.
