Quick tip, if the high frequency spike on the DT990 bothers you just experiment with a small piece of fabric or felt over the driver and under the the ear side fabric. That's what the DT880 does to tame the highs. I modded my DT880 for more like DT990 bass but I left the felt fabric in place over the driver because the peak was piercing without it, even compared to my Grad SR-80.

Great tip, thanks. I'm curious about the mod you did to increase bass on the 880. Care to elaborate?

Surrounding the driver there is some paper like fabric the creates some sort of resistive damping. I just removed it. There is an old thread on here that shows everything. Try to do a search on DT880 bare driver. I never had a good amp to use with my DT880 and the difference was subtle but resulted in better impact for certain songs. A good amp would probably highlight the sonic difference alot more.
