I humbly submit a question:

 

I currently have the following headphones/headphone-like devices:

 

 - Senny HD 419

 -           HD 202

 -           PX 100

 - Monoprice 8320

 

I am looking for some closed, over ear headphones that will sound better (holistically) than my HD419s and PX100s.

I am shooting for less than $80, but my ideal target is $50.  So far I'm thinking about takstar and superlux, but I'm open to suggestions.

For your budget you're not going to get a major jump in sound quality.  What you have is really some of the better (Budget) cans in that price range.  I can only think of one or 2 that will be a much bigger jump at a low price:

Thanks for the quick reply!  Are the CALs a significant upgrade?  Also what do you think of the Superlux/Takstar Beyer homages?  I really like the velour on my HD419s, so that'd definitely something be a plus.

Never used the Superlux/Takstar so I can't say anything about them.  To your question, YES!!  The Cal is my favorite headphone under $150.  I have the Denon AH-D 1000 which was first, but Creative made a set basically the same as the Denon's ..They even use the same drivers etc.  Others would have to give you their thoughts on the Superlux/Takstar.  I think the Superlux look " Cheap" but hey just my thoughts.  The Takstar I've wondered about myself.   

They keep talking about them but I've yet to see a full on Side by Side review...  It's always these sound like, but no real details.

That's why I haven't pulled the trigger on them myself!!

I recently purchased the Takstar Pro80 on eBay for 80 bucks shipped. Could not be happier. The detail is incredible. I've heard things in songs that I've never heard before (not like, HUGE things, but a lot of little ones) the bass presents itself very well. To be honest, I would not care if I had to pay TWICE of what I did, they would still be worth the money. Definitely check them out. Also, go to the Takstar, Gemini, Technical Pro/Greathon thread here on Head-Fi for more information. ClausDK and PurpleAngel have some very good stats and research on them in the thread. It's definitely a must read. But hey, this is all my opinion.

CAL!'s a good choice. Also, they aren't quite over-ear but the DT 235 sound amazing for the price and definitely better than the ones you've mentioned even the 8323 because of its super narrow soundstage.

 

Edit: My bad, you have the 8320 not the 8323 so disregard that.

The Takstar Pro 80 are meant for monitoring, they have a flat response. That's a sound that not everyone likes. (not for bassheads)

Another vote for the CAL!

 

I couldn't recommend that headphone enough honestly. I feel the D1001 that I have is the best value headphone that I've ever owned, and is comparable to headphones 4-6x the price, if not more. It's that good (once modded).

Hey, I appreciate all the replies!  I'm down to either the CALs, the Monoprice 8323, or the Takstar Hi2050.  Can anyone comment on which one of these would be best?  I'm willing to give up the openness of the takstars if they really do emulate the beyers.  Thanks!

Go read some of the posts in the takstar Gemini technical pro/ Greathon thread. You'll find answers there regarding the Takstars.

Thanks for the replies - really appreciate it.  I just picked up the Monoprice 8323 - kinda meh.  I'm now deciding between the HD 595/555, CAL, Superlux 668b/681, and Takstar Hi2050.  As I already have the Monoprice and HD419, I don't consider isolation to be a necessity.  Also, I have a pair of PX100s (which are awesome), so feel free to compare against that.  Thanks!
