Heya,

Lots of his albums are poorly recorded. Full of hiss and noise, because of how it was recorded. The MP3 probably sounds better simply because they compress out a lot of the noise/artifact that is in the original recording so you just hear a smoothed out non-high-fidelity version. Nothing you can do about it really. Other than equalize the treble to find a way to remove the noise. But it's there in the recording, big time.

Very best,

IIRC, Concert by the Sea was recorded in mono.  There was a vinyl version waay back in the day, late '50s, that was released in "electronic stereo" which, in many cases, meant highs on one side and lows on the other for the pseudo effect.  Terrible.  But you're probably listening to the mono version.  Yeah, not very good recording quality.  Fabulous music, tho'.
