I've been using the 960 to feed Toslink to a Chord Hugo, then out to a Noble Kaiser 10. Yes, it's a rather simplistic transport, but it does the job with no hassle and the whole rig sounds exceptional. Removing Hugo from the chain results in a predictable loss in fidelity but the 960 by itself is still a very capable performer straight from the headphone jack. Wish I had a way of getting Rockbox on here though.

Well, thanks to Penon Audio (aka bigbargainonline on eBay), my 6 month journey to get a properly functioning iHiFi 960 player has finally come to a very satisfying end.  Back in February of this year, I purchased the modified iHiFi 960 on eBay from a vendor in China (the vendor known as "annie-audio").  I received my first player which was defective (bad battery) in late February, so I returned it to the vendor.  I received the replacement player in late March and it too was defective (? defective amp) with horrible sound quality.  I sent the second defective player back to the vendor, who claimed after 6 weeks he never received it in the mail, and he basically refused to help me.  8 weeks after sending the second player back to China, the vendor still denied receiving the player.  So, I basically gave up and reluctantly accepted that I had lost the player for good.  Surprisingly, about 1 month later (now in mid-June), the player showed up in my mailbox in Texas.  Despite using exactly the same address (with vendor's phone number on the label) as on the first return, the package was marked as undeliverable by China Post due to "insufficient address".  My gut feeling is that the vendor just refused to accept the player, but I guess I'll never really know for sure.  In any event, I next emailed Xuelin to try to find out how to return the player to them for repair/replacement.  Needless to say, I never heard back from the company.  I next tried to email my original vendor and he never returned an answer either.  I tried to get some local hifi shops to consider trying to fix the player, but they all refused.  I then contacted eBay and Paypal for assistance, but got absolutely nowhere.  At this point, I was ready to just put the defective player in my closet and forget all about my bad experience. The sound quality was so bad, that I couldn't force myself to listen to it.  However, since February, I had ordered some headphones from bigbargainonline, so I was aware of his store.  My last thought on the iHiFi 960 before I permanently stowed it away was to ask Penon Audio if he could supply me with the address to return the player directly to the company.  To my surprise, he offered to ship the player to Xuelin for me. So I sent the player to him and he did the rest.  Within about 3 weeks of sending the player in, Penon Audio received the repaired/replaced player and took the time to personally test it out for me.  All he asked from me for all his time and effort to help me was to pay return postage...  I did decide to buy 2 sets of headphones from him and I received all 3 items in the mail this past week.  The player works perfectly and sounds great.  So again, thanks to Penon Audio, I finally have the player I set out to get 6 months ago.  It's such great comfort knowing that those of us who live outside of Hong Kong and China have an honest, helpful, hard-working, friend in Penon Audio.  I thank him publicly here for all his assistance to me and wish him continued success with his outstanding business.

That is an absolutelly stellar example of customer service. Thanks for posting that, and big points for Penon Audio !!!. Top notch seller there.

I was wondering what happened with the issue you had, figured it had been dealt with already.

Congratulations on finally getting it figured out.:beerchug:

Have anyone compared this to the DX90?  I actually saw this on Taobao the other day (before seeing this thread) and found the player very interesting.  Helps that its “only" $330 shipped in China - might pick one up just for the hell of it to compare to my DX50 and 90.

i have a non-modded ihifi960 (the original one) for 2 months now, i would like to modded it myself or sell it and buy another DAP, it doesn't mean that ihifi960 have a terrible sound or something like that, it just that it lacks a few tools that i need, tools like gain switch, hold switch and an upgrade/update UI (this one proved to be extremely problematic), before i go deciding to sell this DAP can anyone kindly enough to give me a link on how to update UI in this player??frankly i was frustrated since there's no guide in English avail...if there's no answer for this question probably i have to let go this DAP...

You can go to the Xuelin website and get the latest firmware updates for the 960, the website is i-hifi.com.  Look under the section called "News and Events" or something similar to this and you will find links to download the RK27 upgrade image as well as the links to the latest firmware.  I know the firmware works for both the modified 960 and the dual-core 960, so I assume it also works for the original 960.  I have rockbox'd both of my 960s and this has greatly increased my enjoyment of the 960.  Some of the features you want can be had in rockbox.  Rockbox tends to run a bit smoother in the dual-core model, but it also works in the modified 960 as well.  If you find that the latest official Xuelin firmware is still lacking, you might want to consider this as an option before you sell/trade your 960.  Once you learn to change the firmware in your 960, the process of rockboxing is fairly easy.  Good luck and let me know if you need any further help.

Any chance of a step by step firmware upgrade and rockbox installation Jdog? I tried to update the firmware but failed and can't find much info about rockbox that isn't in russian.

I'm sure we'd all appreciate it.

Thank you for your kindly advice Jdog I have downloaded this RK27 update firmware from xuelin web site, unfortunately a new problem arise, my computer can't detect my 960, according to one of my friend that are using a dual-core version of 960 i have to downloaded the driver first, unfortunately i can't find it anywhere, i have tried looking inside my 960 box, i still don't find it, beside that the software seems to be release only for china domestic market because the language being used is in Chinese and i can't read those, i have tried to used google translate to do the jobs and some of my friend that speak/read chinese, but i still can't understand it, frankly i love this DAP and lots my friend did to, it can be an alternate choice of DAP beside the mainstream AK, Fiio and Ibasso, and I hate to sell it, can you or anyone kindly enough to give me a quick guide to update this 960 UI or maybe rockbox it?? it will be great help if you or anyone can do that, thank you
