Your ultimate goal is to give the firmware file to the installer, which will then patch it and install it for you.  You can in theory save it anywhere you like, but I recommend your desktop since its very easy to get to.

I think I know what's going on.  I just went through the same issue installing Rockbox on a Clip Zip.

Assuming the Clip+ is the same, the problem is that you have the Clip's USB mode set to either "Autodetect" or "MTP" mode.  It has to be in "MSC" mode or else the Rockbox installer cannot find it.

Before you connect the Clip to your PC, power it on and navigate to: Settings > System Settings > USB Mode

Then choose "MSC"

Now when you connect the Clip to your PC, it will be recognized by Windows as a drive, and it will be assigned a drive letter.  Rockbox Installer can't find the Clip unless it is assigned a drive letter.  Be sure you can find the drive on your computer before even starting the Rockbox Installer.

Once you start the installer, be sure to click on the "Configuration" button, and then be sure to select the correct drive letter for the Clip.  If you fail to do so, it defaults to your C drive.  If you check your C drive now, you will probably find a folder named: ".rockbox" on it, along with the Clip fimware (it's on the C drive because that's where Rockbox Installer installed it the last time you tried it because it couldn't find your Clip).

No, I have it in MSC mode, place all the files in the G drive where the clip zip is, and it says firmwire update in progress, then it returns to the original firmwire when I turn it back on...Is there is a special set of keys to press to the first time to initate it?...I know this should be a pain the ass, but I have worked on this for 6 hours and it still won't work....I wish one of you lived near me and could just do it for me....hahah

Sounds like you're probably missing something very simple.

You should not be placing ANY files on the G drive where the Clip is.  That's the job of Rockbox Installer.

I would remove every file you put on the Clip manually and start over.

You should have Rockbox Installer in a folder on your desktop (or C drive), as well as the original Sansa firmware that you should have downloaded from here:

http://build.rockbox.org/

Just run Rockbox Installer, click the Configuration tab and select your G drive from the dropdown menu at the top of the screen, and choose the exact model of your Clip (i.e. Clip+ or Clip Zip) at the bottom of hte screen.  When you click on "Install" it will ask you where the Firmware file is located on your desktop (or C drive).  Once you direct it to the file, it will do everything else automatically.

Ok, don't do this.  Like I said, just put the files you need on the desktop so its simple.  Run the installer and follow the directions.  If any point you find yourself putting some file on the clip, you're doing something wrong.

No its very simple.  It should take just a few minutes.  You run the installer, tell it what drive letter your player is, give it the file it asks for and then hit "yes".  If you're spending hours, looking for secret key combinations, and putting files on the player, it sounds like you've completely misunderstood the directions, which involve none of those things.
