Mystery Unclosed: Modern Closed Headphones Compared + Sennheiser HD598 UPDATE: PSB M4U2 Added 7/5/13 - Page 2

Very nice impressions. You are spot on to what I actually felt when compared with Momentum & UE. I have not tried any AKG yet, so I really cant talk about that. Although the AKG can be found in Best Buy, from auditioning there, I didnt like how they look & sound.

The MDR 1R is a great set when paired with the Z walkman without any amp. The pouch is cool. And since ppl relate the Momentums to Bentley, I like to relate the R1 to the Lamborghini 'Sleek & Sexy'

Great review on the UE6000 and the AKG 550, very straight forward and onto the point.  Haven't heard the momentum yet, but the more I read about them the more I'm getting curious.  I love how sennheiser supply a hard case and a beautiful one at that same goes with the headphone jack, not only works well, but looks good.

Never get to try those SRH-940 but hope I could if I had the chance in the near future! smily_headphones1.gif

I like the Momentum the best, followed closely by the MDR-1R, with the K550 a distant third. The main reason are the highs in the K550, which you call artificial and for me are completely grating. As an test I took a string orchestra recording that I know very well (I was present at the recording), and the K550 produces highs that were not there at the recording session. The violins sound shrill and almost nasty to my ears. I don't have this problem with the highs listening to the two others headphones (but e.g. also with the AKG K701). I know that these exaggerated highs are often perceived as providing additional clarity and resolution, but to me it is a coloration that I very much dislike. Other than the highs, the K550 is a perfectly fine headphone, but I just can't listen to it for an extended period.

I also have fairly small ears, to the Momentums are nearly over ear for me and the comfort is fine but not great (both the K550 and the Sony are better in this regard).

Thank you for your compliment! Sounds like the highs are not for everyone...anyway, thanks again for your inputs/opinion. smily_headphones1.gif

I've read that these cans can benefit from amping; do you guys have any suggestions?

Thanks!

Yep! All benefits from amping! For desktop, I would recommend iBasso D7 for K550 if you are going to use it as reference. iBasso D7 to me is a very flexible amplifier, small in size and it give some warmness for some headphones that I threw it on. L3000.gif

Thanks! Do you mind if I ask what AKGs you tried in Best Buy? Very curious about AKG's house sound as I only get to try those K550 and K167 from AKG. smily_headphones1.gif

Thanks! Yea~ hard case makes it suitable for carrying in the bag. My old headphone broke because of me putting it in a soft carrying pouch and my friend sat on it by accident. Somehow the cable near the driver broke. Didn't make him pay for it though since it was my mistake to left it on the coach and at least it's not my IEM. smily_headphones1.gif

Personal preferences.. I think the Momentum's are downright sexy. Love the brown leather. Perfectly described "Bentley-esque"

I like the sound and extra's on the UE6000.. I just wish the style was a little more Adultish.. or Momentum ish.

I haven't had the opportunity to demo the Momentums, but boy do I want to.  Thanks for the review bud!

Great review! I'm looking to get a pair of MDR-1R's soon enough. Glad you found them the most comfortable because I'm really looking for that too for long work days with nothing to do :D

Hi!

Thanks! Yep! MDR-1R is very suitable for long listening section. Really really comfortable I must say! Plenty of space for your ears to breathe in the earcups smily_headphones1.gif

After reading your review again I'm considering the Momentum as well, what do you think would be better for long time listening and movie watching at work?

Not Momentum for sure, with supraaural design they are more for portable, on the go applications. MDR-1R or K550 could be better. MDR-1R in particular very comfy, just disappears when wearing.

Sounds like the MDR-1R is what I need. Andrew I've seen you post a lot in the MDR-1R thread so I'll take your word for it

I was speaking strictly from long listening comfort, sit down, office usage perspective.
You might like Momentum signature better, I plain hated them off the bat, but we all have different sonic preferences.

+1 for 1R if it's for action movie with a lot of explostion. K550 lacks bass slam for that smily_headphones1.gif

For me, the K550 are comfortable, but ear cup remind me of a suction cup.  For some reason when I wear them, they give me a suction cup feel to my ears..really weird.  Other than that, they are an interesting sounding headphone if you never tried an AKG headphone before, detailed, light, open. Oh and the cups feels really big.

may iI ask what you mean by
"basshead need not apply"?
