Macbook Air & LD DAC_I

I ordred a DAC_1 and MKIII which I was going to attach to my Macbook Air via the Headset jack optical output. I just discovered that the MBA unlike my old MBP does not have a combo analog/spdif headphone jack. My question is should I use USB or would it be better to order an Airport Express which does have optical out or maybe a a USB to Optical converter? Well it make enough of a difference to use optical over USB?
 
I do love the idea of the Airport Express because that would let me move my gear around the house to anywhere there is power.
