Good anime by the way.

Actually, Purrin or Purin was in reference to this:

I was in a Hello Kitty Quake 3 clan.

Or, maybe, the r&d on the t50 was just terrible or fostex lost interest. Either way, I'd love to see if somone smarter than I could squeeze more out of the 400/500 driver. But, ruining a $70 headphone as opposed to a +/- 400 headphone isn't really realistic for diy r&d for most of us.
Yeah its already been done, the starting point was a hifiman he-5. Go check out the CodeX by LFF.

Apparently its supposed to blow everything right straight out of the water. One of the best closed back phones, Paradox Slant, is made by the same guy. Makes sense that he'd be the one to do it, since there are tons of modded t50rps but his are some of the best. I bet the alpha dogs come close but the slant is supposed to take soundstage to a new level while keeping the paradox's signature neutrality. Ive got a slant on the way =)

The issue with CodeX and all other LFF modified headphones is that owners are heavily discouraged from disclosing the actual modifications to the public, so in effect those mods are sold, not shared.

The mods I post around here are fully 'open-source', anyone is welcome to try, criticize, tweak, do partial steps, or do additional steps, we're all just headphone owners trying to collectively squeeze the most out of our cans.

At least with the CodeX I doubt anyone would be game to even try the mod. LFF blew several drivers when he was perfecting the mod. Suffice to say most any of the rest of us would blow our drivers up. If anything, keeping it from us prevents everyone with an HE-5 rushing out to get the best headphones ever only to destroy their cans. Its just a much more technical mod. Plus, to divulge the secrets the headphones would have to be all but totally destroyed and in the case of the codeX, theres only maybe 3-4 in the wild so thatd be a very sad thing to do. At least the thunderpants mod made it to the diyers!

You're implying that the Slant is a well known product, where I'm under the impression that it is very new. Are these subjective impressions from people who have tried all three (Alpha Dog, Paradox, and Paradox Slant)?

The slant is new, but if slant > paradox and paradox > all other closed phones then...

The alpha dogs, also being very new, could be better than both, but probably not. I havent seen any direct comparisons. Just that all 3 seem to blow everything else closed away. Alpha Dogs are easier to come across because they are 3D printed. When i get back home Ill try to meet up with someone in Texas thats got the alphas for a comparison

New products with very few owners, all of whom write glowing recommendations. Where have I seen this before...

OH YEAH, head-fi.

I don't dig how you are basing all these conclusions purely on hearsay, and not even heavily reinforced / agreed-upon hearsay, just bits and pieces you read from here and there.

The Paradox is a very well-behaved (in terms of decay) and neutrally tuned modded T50RP, and I liked it a lot when I auditioned it in the past, but it's not simply "better than all other closed headphones", things are more nuanced than that.

The post was about the CodeX and how other drivers have been modified besides the T50rp.

My bad, I shouldn't have crowned a champ based on what others have said, thats how the tea party wins.

edit "the best closed headphone" to "one of, if not the best closed headphones" and that should resolve the issue =)

No closed headphone is as good as the Beats Pro. They bring back the quality that's lost in modern file compression. It says it right there on their website. Plus, I watched a YouTube video where someone said they were the best.

Well that settles that.

Can't lump all closed headphones in a pile IMHO, TH600/900 being closed, very different than those mentioned, and very nice sounding.

If the TH600/TH900 are like the Denon Dx000 series (I've heard the TH600 but didn't examine it too closely) they are technically semi-open, but I'd still consider them closed for all intensive purposes.  Of all closed headphones I've heard to date, I've liked the D5000 the best :o Haven't heard any production-modded T50RPs yet though, so I can't comment there.  The AD goes to show how much of a difference driver housing can make, and I'd like to see more custom molded/printed housing in the future.

FWIW I would certainly consider them semi-open based on their isolating properties (not the best). They isolate about as well as the LCD-XC.
