Edited the brief descriptions of Parts III and IV to further clarify their improvements and importance as a whole. Seriously, it'd almost be a sin not to do those two parts if you've done Parts I & II already, I cannot state enough just how much the latter 2 parts, especially the velour top mod, improve the sound.

Thanks for having faith and trying out the mod; if you don't have tape it might be tough to do Parts III and IV though. Maybe you can sew instead of tape for Part III, but I don't see how you can achieve Part IV without double-sided tape...some sort of glue maybe (that might be messy)?

Funny, when I first got the HE-500 I could barely hear difference between velour and pleather. Today it seems very apparent.

Hey fellow headfi'ers..

i am here on my knees asking for help...i really tried to do this..but knowing i trew 2 pairs into the bin already i know its not for me..

so i turn to u my helpfull fellow headfi'ers..

can anyone do the complete jerg version 2 mod for me? I will pay for if ofcourse..for both pair of  pads needed and the work....i really wanna try it..

I have finished the first two parts of the JergPad mod on my HE-500's. And I definitely hear the benefits. It also necessitates tube rolling again with my Lyr, and what was the best set, is now put away, and a new set… Amperex Orange… have evolved. My o' my… I could stop right here and love them forever! But, why not go for broke?!? All the way!

I am about to cut into the velour pads to make the 3rd part of this JergPad mod. And then, after listening for awhile, I will perform the 4th and last part of the mod.

I want to ask you a question about the last part… using the 2-sided tape to adhere the plate to the HE. Would it not be good to cut the 4 mounting tabs off so as to make the bottom of the plate flat and smooth? For what reason would you leave the tabs? They will not be the fasteners now that the tape will be. Is that not right?

The tabs I leave so that the transition between the back-vents (tape stacks) and the double-sided tape will be broken up by the tabs, and over time the bonded areas won't be lifted by the back-vents.

 

In that light you could theoretically remove the front 2 tabs without any negative impact; I wouldn't say it will benefit you much though.

Does it make any difference which cut you make first... on the inside or on the top center?

About part three of the guide, imo it's not necessary to order an extra pair of velours for the sole purpose of extracting the velour top. I simply picked up some fabric at a local store, cut the right shape, and sewed it on the pad. Imo much less trouble overall, and cheaper.

Doesn't matter, just try to cut as close to the seams on the inside circumference as possible; the outside you can cut more roughly because you will definitely be trimming it in the end, as I noted in the guide.

My wife has looked all over Athens, GA, USA, and can't find the double sided tape that is thin and you can see thru.
 

Can you tell me the brand name and model number of the tape you used that I might order some?

It's just called double-sided adhesive tape, I found it in Dollarama, $1 for 3 rolls. Check your local dollar stores.

 

A commercial brand that is equivalent would be something like Scor-Tape. You could try to find those in home reno stores, or get em from Amazon / Ebay.

 

The tape roll itself should be white; there is a cover tape over the actual double-sided adhesive film.

I've seen it by the brand "Scotch" before. It is on a roll like regular tape and the back cardboard piece is a yellow / black plaid pattern. I'll see if I still have a roll so I can take a picture of it for you. I was just in some store a few days earlier ... staring blindly while I was in line and actually saw a 3 pack of the stuff.  I can't remember the store though at the time ... just a blind moment.

For those with a deeper wallet (it's not expensive for what it is though) and/or 2 left hands: you might want to try the Mr Speakers Alpha Pads ;)

 

I tried these with the Hifiman 4s and 5LEs with excellent result! The comfort is the best of any Hifiman pads I tried (this include the old velour pads) and the sound is shifted (slightly) toward darkness (the whole is not dark, of course) for the most natural result I heard.
