So do I have to remove the fabric screen, or can I just flip the pleather pads inside out and do this?

That should indeed work, if it simplifies things and saves you the fuss of gluing the fabric back, then by all means.

 

I wouldn't say the same with the rubber flaps that hold the plastic ring in place though, did some testing and they significantly contributed to the "cupped" sound of the stock pleathers. So I'd recommend that you trim those away.

And what do you have to say about trimming the excess rubber with an x-acto knife?

 

Btw, I cut out the fabric just to try it out.

It's hard to know if the muffle effect of the rubber flaps are due to them covering the mounting ring holes, or because they seal off the outer edges of the earpads. Unfortunately I couldn't test that when I first formulated the mod.

The T1's I dampened on the whole sound similar to these jergpadded HE-500's now (assuming I did it correctly biggrin.gif) - though the T1's are just a tad bit brighter and have slightly less impact.

 

Have you sent a a pair of jergpads to purrin for measurement? :P

Not yet but I plan to, currently my spare pair of jergpads are on loan.

 

By the way I'm really digging having the vents on the front, been listening to it this evening and the open front-stage effect is pretty amazing. Although it seems to be not without trade-offs, in that the opening of the front-stage also diffuses the focus and engagement of the music by a lot, especially noticeable with center vocals.

 

For anyone curious, I did try the vent minimod across the whole mounting rings (have thick tape stacks go all around the underside), but it was bad in that it abruptly rolled off everything past 35 Hz or so, it seems the very low subbass requires at least partial contact with the mounting ring and the earcup to properly conduct.

Yes, for the past hour now I've compared the velours, stock p-leathers, your Jerg pads and your Jmoney's. Currently listening to the Jerg's as I type.

 

I'm doing this with the HE-6, and frankly the changes are not quite as apparent with these phones; probably because they are already extremely transparent and more detailed.

 

The first thing I noticed was how much less bass both the Jerg's and Jmoney's had. Transparency improved, with the edge going to the Jergs over all the pads. The Jmoney's staged a tad bit better and had slightly more width. My preference remains for the velours with the HE-6; it's necessary for the extra warmth and bass texture.

 

In terms of what I preferred with the HE-6 tonight goes as velour, Jergs, Jmoney and the stock pleather (a bit too analytical). By memory, the LCD-3 pads seemed more transparent and definitely more opened and 3 dimensional; but at the expense of a significant shelf in the over all bass and a bit too much glare in the highs. 

 

I really want to get the appropriate speaker amp to match the HE-6 with the LCD3 pads without going vintage though. If I can fix the tonal balance throughout the frequency range and the timbre of brasses and other metallic instruments; I think the HE-6 seriously scale a good bit over my HD800's and previous LCD3. It's truly impressive as it is, but not perfect.

 

As for the HE500's with these assortments of pads; I'll give it a go on monday or tuesday, and then get back to you guys with the LCD3 pads later in the week when Jerg hands then back to me.

Interesting. The J$ pads on my HE-6 increased the bass for me.

Did you happen to use any "spacers" on the ring surface, so that the pad flaps and the plastic rings didn't sit directly onto the HifiMAN cups?  This process was posted by Jerg and a few others who tried it in the forum, as well as a few pictures.  I can't locate the links to the other pictures at the moment, but here is a quick shot that I took of my pads. Jerg, and the other members who have performed the Jerg-Off Pad Improvement Process (JOPI), have really moved the pad process for the HifiMAN along in a major way.  Just using the leather BeyerDynamic pads with the HifiMAN rings to mount the pads to the HifiMAN cups results in a good sound.  However, to get the "right sound" the tabs of tape or weatherstripping apparently need to be added to provide some isolation between the rings and the driver cups.  In my case, the level and quality of bass really changed in a way that could be appreciated.

Easy, Tiger.  Wait until your leather pads made of Riiiich Corinthian Leather get to your place.  You'll likely love them dearly and probably won't have any thoughts of the Audeze LCD-2 leather pads once you get the J$ pads.

Damnit jerg, I was just about ready to sell off the HE-500's... and then I do this front vent mod. You're making it harder for me to like my T1's. biggrin.gif 

 

Now I've got figure out a way to match the jergpad sound on my T1's once again.

 

Edit: Probably figured it out. Though I've got to shop for some stockings to do it. How manly.

I'm not too sure about having the whole base lifted by tape stacks. Based on my sinewave sweeps, doing this around the full circle of the mounting ring causes an emphasis of midbass and roll-off of subbass, so you will perceive more bass punch but overall bass response will become less linear/extended.

 

That's why I kept the "vent minimod" as a partial lifting so the pads are still able to conduct the subbass through sections of the mounting rings that are not lifted off the cups.
