Yes they were amped (and some modded for balanced configuration) by multi-thousands of $$$ of equipment.  $300 should definitely get you started and well on your way.  One of the nicest setups I have ever heard (without going totally over-board) was a rockhopper M^3.  I always thought the Gilmore lite is an outstanding "wire with gain" amp for groovy-warm cans like the HD580/600/650.
