New Onkyo ES-FC300 / HF300? - Page 6

I had a pair of these, which I bought used. I had to return them because I heard the diaphragms crinkling when I put them on and the audio in the left driver would cut out due to the flimsy connector that didn't seem to stay in place. I was so sad. I ended up returning them and buying Shure SRH440s because I wanted to experiment with different audio, but I sort of regret not giving these another shot. Next time I buy headphones, I think these will be the ones I grab. New, of course. Isolation and comfort was incredible for an on-ear headphone. The sound was nice; slightly warm but leaning towards neutral for me.

JFC on a pogo stick. I found the Onkyo ES-FC300s on Amazon for $99. I had to order them.

Excellent find. They are back up to $149 again.

I suspected they'd go back up quick! Glad I trusted my instincts. I bought it cheaper new than I got my first pair (which was second-hand). Here's hoping I don't have to return this pair.

Shoot, I got the message via camelcamelcamel and since it was at night, I thought let me order them tomorrow, of course they were back up at $149 so the discounted ones sold out very fast.

Well done on pulling the trigger while you could smily_headphones1.gif

Just checked, White Onkyo FC300 are still available on Amazon for 94.06, I think it said there were still 6 available.  So if you don't mind the color, you still have a chance at an inexpensive FC300.

Wow nice find but pure white is only choice.
I have the "supposedly" better HF model with just different cable,

but I am hoping for the SS with silver and brown.. It looks so much more expensive! lol

I use a purple FC myself, easily my favorite look of the models.

I'd pick up another if the violet ever goes down to that sale price. I can always just attach my HF cable to it.

Of course, because of some faulty used models from the warehouse deals, they ended up giving me a brand new HF300 for less than the price of the recent FC sale. Combination of getting lucky and great customer service.

Wait a minute, you had that issue, too? My FC300 was bought used from Amazon Warehouse and it didn't work well, either.

Looks like I got lucky too.  I found a pair of black/red FC300 at Best Buy last week, hanging all alone on a rack with some Skullcandy junk, for $135.  It was the only pair in the store...at first I was suspicious, but the box was sealed and it was pretty clear once I opened them up that they were new.  I am liking the sound and comfort level.  I have a Fiio cable for my SE535's that fits nicely, but I really didn't hear any difference in the sound with the Fiio cable.  For potable use the flat stock cable is a bit more practical.  I need a little more time to compare these to my other cans, but so far, I am liking what I hear.

Some other observations and ramblings:

  • Tried them on a flight this week...isolation not near good enough to take the place of my Denon NC's.
  • Thought the mids might have been a little recessed out of the box, but after about 50 hours burn in, they seem to be just right.
  • Bass may be a little accentuated, but it is good for me. Very clear and well defined...no muddiness.
  • Highs just right...no sibilance to my ears.
  • Instrument separation and sound stage about what you would expect for closed on ear cans.
  • I find these to be very comfortable.  I wear them for short periods (twice daily dog walks) and long listening sessions (at desk while working, reading, or watching movies).
  • Onkyo calls these on ear...larger than all my other on ears...but not quite large enough to be considered over ear.
  • Pretty solidly built...not B&W level...but I would say much better than others at this price level.  Don't see any real weaknesses in design or build.  (I tend to baby my gear.)
  • Not crazy about red cable, but it works well...so not a major issue.  Use them with 160Gb Classic...don't need iPhone controls so lack of them is not a factor.

Overall...a very nice set of cans with well balanced sound, and really excellent clarity.  Probably the best on ears I have heard at this price point.  I demo'd the Sennheiser Momentum On Ear extensively, and prefer the Onkyo's hands down.

The plug didn't give a good connection. So, it would cut out whenever it moved. In the end, it worked out because they sent me a brand new one for the price I paid for a used one out of the Warehouse deals.

Nice find, though it ships in 1-3 week on Amazon.

The Onkyo's are very solid performers and worthy competitors at the price range. I am happy with my pair. If you like classical or jazz or greatly appreciate detail in your music, no matter the genre, try the Martin Logan Mikros90s. They are running $80 at Amazon.
