Lightning Adapter line-out sound quality?

Any feedback on how does compare the line out of the Lighting adapter dock vs the old idevices built in line out?

 

The lack of a built in line out in the 2012 iDevices is holding me back since it's the more ubiquitous connection in the audio world.

With the new nano, the sound double amped (3.5mm jack as source) apparently sounds better than the adapter + LOD. I tried LOD with an older generation iPod and I couldn't even tell the difference between that and straight from the headphone jack of my iPod Touch 5.
