I'm proud to say that Russian enthusiasts (with respect to me of cause icon_smile.gif ) have integrated famous rockbox firmware into this beautiful DAP.

Here is a link to MA Port of rockbox firmware and instructions for flashing: http://www.rockbox.org/wiki/HifietMAPort

Feel free to ask me the questions about it.

I will rockbox my MA9 ASAP. I should also add that i have received the 1796 DAC board as well as a new amp board, i believe it to be either the one for the new MA8 (so i have both the DAC and Amp of an MA8) or the balanced board. So far i have just swapped amp boards and the sound is so different. Much more powerful, in your face but less resolving. It also is much louder, i reckon it will be able to drive anything very well, need to take it for a spin with Planars.

Rockbox is great news as i hate the current UI!

Under rockbox this DAP play almost every audiofile you can find.  Icluding very rare ones such as atary games sound and so on.

It is both hardware and software recessed to the 16x44.1 (orange book standart) but plays everything much more fine than another DAP plays high resolution.

The MA9 not supporting high res never really bothered me that much as it sounds that good! Do you have a guide for rockboxing the MA9 on a mac by chance?

Also what colours will the MA8 be available in, the pink looks awesome!

There are 2 models from Monster Audio available. The MA9 model (black, price $820 w/o shipping) is for audiophiles and sound perfectionists and bronze (not pink!) ones is MA8 model with more simple DAC (best deltasigma DAC from Burr-brown: PCM1792) and simpler amplifier schematic will be available soon for price $480 (without  shipping)

so tera vs MA9. what would you get?

from what i saw the tera can have more memory and the battery lasts longer.

but SQ wise what is better?

It is not correct. Terra vs MA9 with rockbox is like modern 2 core  computer vs the calculator. :)

MA9 can work with SDXC micro SD cards after forced formatting it into FAT32 without any problems
As for SQ I cant ever hear the Terra. So I cant answer you...

? so with rockbox it has longer battery life?

and you can put 128GB in the tera same way :) but it will be about the same amount of songs lol

The terms of SQ is a very subjective. Somebody prefer thin girls and somebody more bodied :)

All I can say that the MA9 is the DAP from the highest leagues in terms of SQ. You can read my total review on it on my site

but you must to use google translate to translation from russian.

Yes i have a MA9, this is my review and i also have both the MA8 boards so i can stick them in my MA9. One picture looks pink but the other does look bronze to be fair.

Any chance of a guide for the rockbox as i am using mac?

If you have not heard the Tera then please do not comment on the sound quality difference, it is very misleading to people.

Hey fp581. I own the MA9 and i have also owned a Tera Player in my life time. Overall sound quality and magic has to go to the Tera Player BUT the high output impedance of the Tera causes frequency response changes in some IEMs and effects of damping can also cause severe bass roll off, like with the Tera 4.Ai pairing. The MA9 is also a lot more capable in driving headphones.

It really does depend in what your after!

I cant say for sure because don't hear the Terra DAP. But as an engineer I can say that Terra looks like a toy in comparsion with the MA9. In all the technical aspects.

Possibly there is a SQ miracle though ;)

hmm, i read about it here, i am going to use only IEM (i live in a warm country) and i got some suggestions about headphones that works like wonder with the tera, like the x10 that i have (i love warmer sound).

so the tera sound better thats good to know, and i am going to try and fit a 256GB in it,

well after just googling the price i think i wont do it lol 600$ is way too much i can buy 128GBX6 for the same price that's crazy.

i think i'll get one 32GB and one 128GB for shuffling

High resistance at the output of Terra turns your x10 to the neutral or even  thin sounding HP dependin on Ohms on it.

i think it's 50 so not that low
