Music genres and headphone characteristics to complement them?

Hi.

 

I wanted to know what kind of headphone characteristics would be best suited for each genre of music, like I guess headphones with heavy, full bass would be great for dubstep/electronic music.

 

I usually listen to classical and jazz. I'm right now just browsing through headphone reviews. What are some qualities that would be good specifically for the genre of the music I listen to? (or does it not matter so much as long as the sound quality is decent in general)

The problem is people have different preferences. There are folk who like bassy electronica, but are not listening on bassy headphones, but rather neutral headphones, it depends what you're listening for. Some listen for the bass. Some listen of the speed and detail of things and don't want a lot of bass. The same idea applies to all genres and headphones. Preference is the king here. There are some generalities, but they should be rather obvious (like the one you pointed out).

 

Some generalities that I would say for classical and jazz are that you want a very good sound stage, so an open-air headphone would be ideal with lots of room for separation. You would also want a very broad range, so the headphone would need to be able to deal with very low bass tones, that do not bleed over into mids, and treble that does not over-shadow everything, or in other words, a neutral headphone with balance, but tons of range.

 

Some suggestions not knowing anything about your preferences, needs, or budget:

 

Beyer DT880

Hifiman HE-400

+1 for the Dt880. Been dying to get my hands on a pair of he 400's. Also take a look at the q701. Great mids and smooth treble.
