Get SRH1440, or wait for SRH1840 price to drop?

Are the SRH1440 and SRH1840 known to be in a bit of a HD600/HD650 or DT880/DT990 situation - where the more expensive of the two is not neccesarily better, but just different? Or is the SRH1840 just plain better than the SRH140 in every aspect?

 

I have been doing some reading and found, for example, that the SRH1440 has a more forward midrange than the SRH1840, which I like the idea of. But then a Headfonia review said explicity to not bother with the SRH1440 - and to go straight for the SRH1840.

 

As of now the SRH1840 is prohibitively expensive for me, but I have feeling that in a couple of years or so, its price will drop to that of the SRH1440 presently.

 

Do you think the price of the SRH1840 will actually drop that low? And is it just flat out better than the SRH1440? Also, is the SRH1440 on par with the quality of the old HD650/K701/DT880 trio? And if so, I guess that might mean the SRH1840 is in between the HD650/K701/DT880 and the HD800/T1/LCD3/HE-6 in quality?

The SRH1440 will be a disappointment if you're coming from the K701/HD650/DT880 territory. Heck, even the SRH1840 will be a disappointment considering its $700 price point. Having owned them both though, I find the SRH1840 generally superior except in a few genres.

 

I suggest you get the SRH1840 used- I got mine for $400 on the FS/FT forum.

The SRH1840 does not compete with the Flagships like the HE-6, HE500, LCD2, LCD3, HD800, etc. I don't even think it competes with the HE-400 actually.

 

I think both the SRH1440 & 1840 are over-priced. They're super neutral. But you're paying nearly flagship level cost for something that really could be had with the AKG Q701/K701 basically for less than half the cost.

Haha, to be fair where I am, the SRH1840 is much less than half the price of the HD800/HE-6/LCD3, and about half the cost of the T1.

 

But you'd say it's closer in quality to the fabled K701/HD650/DT880 'mid-fi' trio than the present flagships?

Actually, the first time I heard the 1840 and compared it to my K701 I preferred the K701. Of course I came to prefer the 1840 over time, but that just shows how close to mid-fi the 1840 is considering its price.
