Ipod 5.5 distorted HELP

I bought an ipod video 30gb the 5.5 model. I read everywhere that its the best ipod for sound. When I got it I put all my iTunes bought music on it 256 aac. When I play the music from it mostly heavy metal it sounds very distorted in the low end like its mixing with the low mids and sounds dirty. So I replaced the headphone jack today and it sounds the exact same. I compared it to my iPod touch 5th gen and the touch is wayyyyy cleaner but not as loud. I even turned down the 5.5 to volume match it to the touch and its still dirty sounding. I have both iPods eq set to rock and the sound check off, I'm also using the same headphones (tritton kunai gaming headphones) but the same result happens when I compared with different phones. I have no idea why a supposedly better source would be distorted. I thought maybe the 5.5 was meant to drive bigger more powerful headphones and that's why the touch drives simpler headphones better. Any input would be awesome thanks

Oh yeah and even when I switch the 5.5 over to rockbox it's still dirty sounding compared to my brothers rockboxed sansa clip + so it ain't the firmware

ipod eq adds distortion.  Install Rockbox firmware and problem should be solved.

Play a FLAC audio file on Rockbox with all EQ's turned off and let us know if there is still distortion.

Well I don't mess with flac but I figured it out on flat eq there is no distortion at all on full blast and this is on the apple firmware, on rockbox the volume is way quieter and still distorted, but on my brothers sansa clip rockbox does everything better, and rockbox kills the crap out of my 5.5's battery. Idk anybody here got sum secret setup for a rockboxed 5.5?

No just use it and enjoy simple as that. Throw in all FLAC's if you want a peace of mind. If you don't enjoy the crap, sell it and get a ipod touch or DX100 or AK44 (oops I mean Ak100).

I have an iPod touch and the 5.5 and the 5.5 sounds better in regular os on flat eq, plus I don't use flac cause I like having 3000 songs instead of 200

Use mp#Gain on the music files on the iPod, and the clipping should go away: http://sourceforge.net/directory/os:windows/freshness:recently-updated/?q=mp3gain

Once you have FLAC/ALAC you can't go back.

Rockboxed 5.5g/240GB + FLAC's + A pair of decent IEM's = All-time Portable DAP Star

How much was that hdd and where is a good reliable source to get flac/alac, only reason I don't go that route is cause I seen that iTunes let's u change a track into alac even tho it was mp3 and when ur done it has the high bitrate that alac does, but how the hell does it get the data to do that it's gotta be fake.

Bottom line I' don't feel like buying all my music on cd and paying an ass load

well for anyone that has iPod battery issues like my iPod Classic 7th gen battery was the bottle neck, not anymore! it's an iLuvs found here and at a great price! http://www.ebay.com/itm/iLuv-i603-Battery-Booster-with-Silicone-Case-for-iPod-/190543007203?pt=Other_MP3_Player_ Accessories& hash= item2c5d3f8de3,!

here's some pics of what I am charging, has a great low profile and fits like a glove, can't wait to NOT having my iPod run out in the middle of my audio sessions? you can leave it in its case, or pull it out for an even smaller footprint,

and you can run an LOD off of the bottom of the battery!

but the CLAS won't charge and play at the same time?
